Blank, numbered or named
The sheet opens blank. Numbered puts 1 on Arizona, 2 on New Mexico, 3 on Oklahoma and 4 on Texas, with a line for each name; Named writes the names in. Print this map prints the sheet on screen.
A Southwest region blank map of four states
The Southwest is not a Census Bureau region, so the page names its list: the four states of National Geographic's school maps. California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado, which wider lists add, are drawn as plain land for a class that wants to write them in.
- Have students mark Four Corners, the point where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado meet.
Questions and answers
Which states are in the Southwest region?
On the common school list, four: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. Wider lists add California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. No list is official, because the Census Bureau has no Southwest region.
Is Texas in the South or the Southwest?
Both, depending on the list. The Census Bureau puts Texas and Oklahoma in the South. School maps of five regions put them in the Southwest with Arizona and New Mexico.
Why is Mexico on the map?
Arizona, New Mexico and Texas all border Mexico, so its land is drawn below them as plain land with no number.
