How this list was compiled: The 47 countries are the member states of the United Nations that the UN files under its five regions of Asia: https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states and United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, both checked 2026-09-19. Capitals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Asia, checked 2026-09-19. One capital is left out because the source marks it as claimed; that country is asked by name only. Shapes of the drawing that are dependencies, that the points file flags as disputed, or that the top edge cuts off are not on this list and are never asked. Positions in the hints were read off the drawing. The two capitals of Sri Lanka, both accepted: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka, checked 2026-09-19. Astana named Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana, checked 2026-09-19. The second and later sentences of each detail line were read on 2026-09-19 in the lead of that country's article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the country's name as the quiz labels it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_(country) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland for those two); no detail line names a flagged shape or describes a border that is contested. The 24 countries, and where the list comes from

Two United Nations regions supply most of it. Western Asia, also called Southwest Asia, gives 17: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Central Asia gives 5: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Iran and Afghanistan are filed under Southern Asia but sit in the middle of this map, so both are asked.

Seven rings, and a button for each region

Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon and Qatar are hard to hit at this scale, so a numbered ring marks each. The regions under Start from use the United Nations names: Western Asia (17), Central Asia (5) and Southern Asia, which here holds only Iran and Afghanistan. Egypt, Russia, Pakistan and India are background.

  • Start at the Caspian Sea. Four of the 24 share its shore: Azerbaijan west, Iran south, Turkmenistan east, Kazakhstan northeast.
  • Kazakhstan, across the top, is the world's largest landlocked country. Below it, only Uzbekistan touches the other four republics.
  • Three Persian Gulf rings: Kuwait at the head, Bahrain off the Saudi coast, Qatar on the short peninsula beside it.

Questions and answers

Is Southwest Asia the same as the Middle East?

Not quite. Southwest Asia is another name for Western Asia. The Middle East usually means that region without the Caucasus and with Egypt, so Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are asked here and Egypt is not. The Middle East capitals quiz makes the opposite choice.

Why are Iran and Afghanistan on this map?

The United Nations places both in Southern Asia. Most other definitions of Southwest Asia include Iran, and Afghanistan is the country most often added to Central Asia. Both are asked here and on the South Asia countries quiz.

Does the quiz accept Türkiye for Turkey?

Yes. In 2022 the country's government asked the United Nations to use Türkiye in English, and the United Nations agreed. The quiz prints Turkey and counts Turkiye as correct, with or without the dots over the u.
