How this list was compiled: No list of the Middle East and North Africa is standard: Wikipedia, Middle East and North Africa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East_and_North_Africa, read 2026-10-01) says so, gives the other names of the region (West Asia and North Africa, South West Asia and North Africa) and says that Turkey is left out of some lists though it is almost always counted in the Middle East. This page states its own list: the member states of the United Nations that the United Nations Statistics Division files under Northern Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia) and under Western Asia apart from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia (14 states), and Iran, which it files under Southern Asia (M49, https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, read 2026-10-01). Capitals: Wikipedia, List of national capitals, read 2026-10-01; Israel is asked by name only and the dataset gives it no capital, as the sister datasets of this site do. The Maghreb as Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia; the Levant as Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Palestine; the Arabian Peninsula with Saudi Arabia covering its largest part, Yemen in the south, Oman in the southeast, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in the east and the island country of Bahrain off the east coast, northwest of Qatar: Wikipedia, Maghreb, Levant and Arabian Peninsula, read 2026-10-01. Other positions in the notes were read off the drawing. Shapes of the drawing that are not member states of the United Nations are drawn, never asked and not described. How it works

This Middle East and North Africa map quiz asks 21 countries on one blank map, from Morocco to Iran and south to Sudan and Yemen. It starts in North Africa and moves east a round at a time.

The 21 countries, and where the list comes from

No list of this region is official, so the page states its own: the member states of the United Nations that it files under Northern Africa (six) and under Western Asia outside the Caucasus (14), and Iran. Schools often call the same region North Africa and Southwest Asia, so a North Africa and Southwest Asia map quiz asks these countries too.

Six rings for the smallest countries

Bahrain, Cyprus, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon and Qatar are too small to tap at this scale, so each has a numbered ring. The region is usually described as most of the Arab League and its neighbors. The neighbors asked here are Turkey, Iran, Israel and Cyprus.

  • Along the African coast, west to east: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt. Sudan is south of Egypt.
  • Saudi Arabia fills the middle of the peninsula. Yemen and Oman share its south, and the small Gulf states line its east.
  • For a North Africa and Middle East map quiz in class, learn the large shapes first: Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey.

Questions and answers

What does SWANA mean on a SWANA map?

SWANA stands for South West Asia and North Africa. It names the same region as the Middle East and North Africa, or MENA, by where it lies. West Asia and North Africa, WANA, is a third name for it.

Is Turkey part of the Middle East and North Africa?

It depends on the list. Turkey is almost always counted in the Middle East, yet some lists of this region leave it out. This page asks it, along with Cyprus and Iran.

Which countries are in North Africa?

The United Nations files six member states under Northern Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. The first round of the quiz asks those six.

Can I see a North Africa and Southwest Asia political map with the names on?

Yes. Press Show me the labels first and the map writes in the country names. The six smallest get a ring to tap instead. For paper, More options has a print with the answer key.
