How it works

This Scandinavia map quiz asks five countries. Norway, Sweden and Denmark are Scandinavia in the narrow sense. Finland and Iceland are the other two Nordic countries, which English speakers often count as Scandinavia too.

Where each of the five sits

Norway and Sweden share the long peninsula. Norway is the outer side, on the open ocean, and reaches over the top of Sweden. Sweden is the inner side, on the Baltic Sea. Finland is the next country east, across a long arm of that sea. Denmark is the small one at the bottom, a peninsula pointing north with islands beside it. Iceland is the island on its own at the upper left.

  • Sweden and Finland are easy to swap. Sweden runs beside Norway all the way down; Finland meets Norway only in the far north.

Questions and answers

Is Finland part of Scandinavia?

Strict lists leave it out. Finnish is a Uralic language, unrelated to Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Some authors count Finland as Scandinavian anyway, because its economy and culture are so like those of the three.

Is Iceland part of Scandinavia?

Sometimes. Icelandic grew out of Old Norse, as Danish, Norwegian and Swedish did, though speakers of those three understand it only in part. Iceland is always one of the Nordic countries.

Which countries are on the Scandinavian Peninsula?

Norway and Sweden, with part of northern Finland. Denmark is not on it, although it is always counted as Scandinavia.

Does the map of Scandinavia quiz ask capitals?

No. The drawing has borders and no cities, so every question is a country. Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Reykjavík are on the Northern Europe map quiz, which asks each capital after you name its country.
