How this list was compiled: The list is the 20 sovereign states where Spanish is the national language by law or in practice, plus Puerto Rico, which makes the 21 taught in Spanish classes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_territories_where_Spanish_is_an_official_language (the list, the order by population, the languages of Equatorial Guinea and the status and languages of Puerto Rico) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic_America (18 countries in the Americas, with Puerto Rico listed apart as a territory of the United States), checked 2026-09-19. All 20 countries are member states of the United Nations; Puerto Rico is not, and is never counted as a country here. Capitals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_the_Americas and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_capitals (the two capitals of Bolivia, and Ciudad de la Paz in place of Malabo), checked 2026-09-19. The list behind this Spanish countries map quiz

Eighteen of the countries are in the Americas, from Mexico down to Argentina and Chile. Spain and Equatorial Guinea make 20. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, not a country, so the set The 20 countries leaves it out. Brazil, Belize, Haiti, Jamaica and the Guianas are drawn for position and never asked.

How a round of 21 goes

Two more sets zoom the map: Mexico, Central America, Caribbean (10) and South America (9). El Salvador and Puerto Rico are too small to tap, so each has a numbered ring. Spain and Equatorial Guinea sit in two boxes drawn larger than the main map, so do not judge Spain against Mexico by size.

  • Caribbean, west to east: Cuba, the Dominican Republic on the island it shares with Haiti, then ringed Puerto Rico.
  • The only two with no coast sit together in mid-continent: Bolivia, the larger, above Paraguay.
  • Older worksheets give Malabo as Equatorial Guinea's capital. Since January 2026 it is Ciudad de la Paz, on the mainland.

Questions and answers

Is this the 21 Spanish speaking countries quiz from Spanish class?

Yes. Most classes teach 21 names: the 20 countries where Spanish is the national language by law or in practice, plus Puerto Rico, where Spanish and English are both official. For a Spanish countries quiz with sovereign states only, pick The 20 countries under Start from.

Is there a Map Labeling: Spanish Speaking Countries answer key?

Print labelled works as one: this map with all 21 names on it. That handout was not made here and may number the countries differently, so check your answers by name. Print blank gives the numbered map with 21 lines.

Is a Spanish map quiz about Spain or about all these countries?

It can mean either. This is a Spanish speaking country map quiz, with Spain as one shape among 21. For Spain itself, the Spain quiz asks its 17 autonomous communities, and the Mexico quiz asks 31 states and Mexico City.

Why is Equatorial Guinea on a list of Spanish speaking countries?

It was a Spanish colony until 12 October 1968, and Spanish is still its main official language, beside French and Portuguese. It is the one sovereign country in Africa with Spanish as official, so it has a box of its own beside South America.
