How it works
This Iberian Peninsula quiz map asks Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Madrid and Lisbon first, then the Balearic Islands, two mountain ranges and six rivers, then the waters around the coast.

The six rivers, in the order of their mouths
Start at the northwest corner and follow the coast south. The Minho reaches the Atlantic first, on the border. The Douro comes next, at Porto, then the Tagus at Lisbon. Round the southwest corner, the Guadiana comes down the border and the Guadalquivir, the river of Seville, ends a little further east. The Ebro alone runs the other way, past Zaragoza to the Mediterranean.
Two dots and two shaded patches
Madrid and Lisbon are the two small dots. The Pyrenees and the Sierra Nevada are shaded patches, and a tap inside one is a tap on the range, not on Spain. Andorra is the small shape inside the Pyrenees.
Questions and answers
What is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula?
The Tagus. It rises in eastern Spain and flows west past Toledo into Portugal. The Ebro is second in length and the longest river that stays inside Spain.
What is the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula?
Mulhacén, in the Sierra Nevada, the southern of the two ranges on this map. The highest peak of the Pyrenees is Aneto, on the Spanish side.
Where does the name Iberian Peninsula come from?
The name has long been tied to the Ebro. Greek writers called the river Ibēros and the Romans Hiberus, and the Roman writer Pliny says the Greeks named the whole peninsula Hiberia after it.
What bodies of water surround the Iberian Peninsula?
The Atlantic Ocean on the west and southwest, the Bay of Biscay on the north and the Mediterranean Sea on the east and southeast. The quiz asks all three and the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow gap at the southern tip.
Is the Iberian Peninsula the largest peninsula in Europe?
No. It is second in area; only the Scandinavian Peninsula is larger.
