Which countries this Balkans map quiz asks

The Balkans have no agreed list. This page asks the ten member states of the United Nations drawn on its map. Most lists count Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia; wider ones add Romania and Slovenia. Turkey, Hungary and Moldova are gray land at the edges.

A Balkan capitals quiz in the same round

Choose Name it and each country is followed by its capital: Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Podgorica, Tirana, Skopje, Athens, Sofia or Bucharest. A question scores only when both answers are right.

  • Montenegro is the small country on the coast between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.
  • Serbia and North Macedonia have no coast.
  • Bulgaria and Romania are the two on the Black Sea.

Questions and answers

Is this a Balkan Peninsula map quiz or a quiz of the Balkan states?

Both names fit. The map is the peninsula, bordered by the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean and Black seas, and the questions are countries. Romania and Slovenia lie partly or wholly north of the peninsula and are on wider lists of the Balkans.

Is Kosovo on the map?

Kosovo is drawn as the map source draws it and is not asked. Some borders on this map are disputed. The map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, and does not take a side.

Where does the name Balkans come from?

From the Balkan Mountains, which run across Bulgaria. That is one reason many lists of the Balkans include Bulgaria.
