  1. Belmopan Belmopan is the capital of Belize, a planned city founded in 1970 about 50 miles inland. It replaced Belize City, the port that Hurricane Hattie nearly destroyed in 1961. Belize City is larger and is the common wrong answer.
  2. San José San José is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, in the Central Valley in the middle of the country. It was founded in 1736, and its name means Saint Joseph.
  3. San Salvador San Salvador is the capital and largest city of El Salvador, in the highlands, surrounded by volcanoes and prone to earthquakes. El Salvador is the only one of the seven countries with no Caribbean coast.
  4. Guatemala City Guatemala City is the capital and largest city of Guatemala, in a mountain valley in the south-central part of the country. The Spanish founded it after an earthquake in 1773 destroyed their earlier capital, now called Antigua Guatemala.
  5. Tegucigalpa Tegucigalpa has been the capital of Honduras since 1880, in a valley in the southern highlands. The constitution names it capital together with Comayagüela, its sister city across the Choluteca River, so that answer counts too.
  6. Managua Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua, on the shore of Lake Managua. Founded in 1819, it became the capital in 1852, and it was rebuilt after earthquakes in 1931 and 1972.
  7. Panama City Panama City is the capital and largest city of Panama, at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. It was founded in 1519. After a fire destroyed it in 1671, it was rebuilt two years later about 5 miles away.

How it works

This Central America capitals map quiz names a capital, such as Managua or Tegucigalpa, and you tap its country. It asks the seven countries from Belize and Guatemala down to Panama.

The seven countries

Central America is usually counted as seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. No country needs a ring, though El Salvador is small, so pinch to zoom on a phone.

Comayagüela and the other names that count

Honduras has two capitals in law. Its constitution names Tegucigalpa together with Comayagüela, the sister city across the Choluteca River, so the label reads Tegucigalpa and a typed Comayagüela counts. Spanish names count too: Ciudad de Guatemala and Ciudad de Panamá. Plain Panama counts, because the city also goes by that name, but plain Guatemala does not.

  • Belmopan is the usual miss. Belize City is larger and was the capital until 1970, after Hurricane Hattie nearly destroyed the port in 1961.
  • Two capitals start with San. San Salvador shares its last word with El Salvador, and San José, Spanish for Saint Joseph, belongs to Costa Rica.
  • Two are the country plus City: Guatemala City and Panama City. That leaves Managua, on Lake Managua, for Nicaragua and Tegucigalpa for Honduras.

Questions and answers

Is Mexico part of Central America?

Not on this page. The usual list has seven countries, and the quiz asks those. The United Nations statistical regions also file Mexico under Central America, which gives eight. Mexico City is asked on the world capitals quiz.

Which of the seven capitals is the newest?

Belmopan. It was founded as a planned city in 1970, which makes it one of the newest national capitals in the world. At the other end, Panama City was founded in 1519 and San José in 1736.

Do I need the accent in San José?

No. Typing forgives accents, capital letters and punctuation, so San Jose and Comayaguela both count. A name longer than five letters also forgives one slip, which helps most with Tegucigalpa: swap two letters and it still counts.
