Greater Antilles and the Bahamas 5

  1. Havana Havana is Cuba's capital and largest city, and its main port. Spain founded it in 1519, and it became the capital of the island in 1552. Its Spanish name is La Habana.
  2. Santo Domingo Santo Domingo is the Dominican capital and largest city. Founded in 1496, it is the Americas' oldest European settlement lived in without a break. From 1936 to 1961 it was called Ciudad Trujillo.
  3. Port-au-Prince Port-au-Prince is Haiti's capital and most populous city, on the Gulf of Gonâve. It was incorporated under French rule in 1749, and its layout resembles an amphitheater, with homes on the hills above the waterfront.
  4. Kingston Kingston is Jamaica's capital and largest city, on the southeastern coast, facing a harbor sheltered by the Palisadoes sand spit. Do not confuse it with Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' capital.
  5. Nassau Nassau is the Bahamas' capital and largest city, on the island of New Providence, home to most of the country's people. Its name honors England's William III, Prince of Orange-Nassau.

Lesser Antilles 8

  1. St. John's St. John's is the capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda, in the west of Antigua around its harbor. It became an official trading point in 1675 and later replaced Falmouth as the island's main town.
  2. Bridgetown Bridgetown is Barbados' capital and largest city, with its port on Carlisle Bay on the southwestern coast. It was formerly called the Town of Saint Michael, and it still lies in the parish of that name.
  3. Roseau Roseau is Dominica's capital and largest city, on the west, leeward coast, on the site of the Island Carib village of Sairi. Do not mix the country up with the Dominican Republic, whose capital is Santo Domingo.
  4. St. George's St. George's is Grenada's capital and largest city, on a horseshoe-shaped harbor below the hillside of an old volcano crater. Nutmeg is a key crop, which is why Grenada is known as the Island of Spice.
  5. Basseterre Basseterre is Saint Kitts and Nevis' capital and largest city, on the southwestern coast of Saint Kitts, the larger island. Few towns in the Eastern Caribbean are older.
  6. Castries Castries is Saint Lucia's capital and largest city, laid out in a grid on reclaimed land by a sheltered harbor. Arthur Lewis (Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, 1979) and Derek Walcott (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1992) were born here.
  7. Kingstown Kingstown is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' capital and largest city, in the southwest corner of the island of Saint Vincent. It is one letter away from Kingston, Jamaica, and the quiz treats the two as different answers.
  8. Port of Spain Port of Spain is Trinidad and Tobago's capital and chief port, on the Gulf of Paria in northwest Trinidad. The island's capital since 1757, it is smaller than the municipalities of Chaguanas and San Fernando.

How it works

This Caribbean capitals quiz names one island country at a time, from Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago, and you pick its capital: Bridgetown, Castries or Roseau. It asks the 13 island countries that are member states of the United Nations.

Thirteen countries, two rounds

One set holds the 5 of the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas: Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas. The other holds the 8 of the Lesser Antilles, the arc from Antigua and Barbuda down to Trinidad and Tobago, and zooms in so their rings spread out. The 15 territories on the drawing are never asked or counted.

Seven rings, six islands to tap

In Find it the five big-island countries and Trinidad and Tobago are tapped directly. The other 7 are too small for a finger, so each has a ring on a leader line, and a tap on the ring counts. When typing, La Habana counts for Havana.

  • Kingston is Jamaica's capital and Kingstown is Saint Vincent's. Each is marked wrong for the other: the longer name goes with the longer country name.
  • Two capitals are saints with an apostrophe: St. John's in Antigua and Barbuda, high on the arc, and St. George's in Grenada, near its foot.
  • Roseau goes with Dominica, a ringed island in the Lesser Antilles, and Santo Domingo with the Dominican Republic, on Hispaniola. They are different countries.

Questions and answers

Which islands are Leeward and which are Windward?

The Leeward Islands are the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, here Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Kitts and Nevis. The Windward Islands run south from Dominica through Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to Grenada. Britain counted Dominica as Leeward until 1940.

How many countries are in the Caribbean?

Thirteen island countries are member states of the United Nations, and this quiz asks all of them. The other 15 shapes are territories, overseas departments and constituent countries of larger states, so their main towns are not national capitals. Tapping one is not a miss.

Do I have to type the period in St. John's?

No. Typed answers ignore capital letters, accents, periods, apostrophes and hyphens, so st johns and port au prince both count. One slip is forgiven in a name longer than 5 letters, unless it lands exactly on another capital, so Kingston never passes for Kingstown.
