How this list was compiled: The 20 regional capitals were read on 2026-10-01 in the table at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Italy and in the GeoNames gazetteer (the place coded as seat of each region, and Rome as the national capital), https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/IT.zip; the regions table at https://www.citypopulation.de/en/italy/cities/ agrees on all 20. Which capitals are the largest city of their region and which are not (Pescara above L'Aquila, Reggio Calabria above Catanzaro, Verona above Venice): the resident population of 1 January 2026 from the Italian statistics office, ISTAT, as printed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Italy and at citypopulation.de, where the census of 2021 gives the same order; read on 2026-10-01. Potenza and Matera are close and are not ranked. The Aosta Valley as the smallest region and Molise as the second smallest, by area: the Wikipedia table and the citypopulation.de table. The Italian names of seven capitals and of Apulia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:IT and the Wikipedia table. The map, the region points and the five groups are copied from this site (Natural Earth); positions named in the hints were read off the drawing. Licence: own work

How it works

Each question of this Italian regions and capitals quiz names a region and asks for its capital, such as Bologna or Cagliari. Italy has 20 regions, one capital each. A round asks 12 at most, the north and the center first.

Three capitals that are not the biggest city

L'Aquila is smaller than Pescara, Catanzaro is smaller than Reggio Calabria, and Venice has fewer people than Verona. Rome is the capital of Lazio as well as of Italy. The list under the map sets each capital beside its region.

Five groups, two directions

Under Start from the groups are North-west (4 capitals), North-east (4), Center (4), South (6) and Islands (2), and the map zooms to the one you pick. The other direction, Find it, names a capital for you to tap its region. Type Firenze or Florence, Torino or Turin: the Italian name is marked right as well.

  • Seven capitals have an English name that differs from the Italian one: Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Genoa, Florence and Venice.
  • The two island regions are quick: Palermo for Sicily and Cagliari for Sardinia.
  • The South has the most to learn, six capitals: Naples, Bari, L'Aquila, Potenza, Catanzaro and Campobasso.
