  1. Bandar Seri Begawan Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei's capital and largest city, was called Brunei Town until 1970, when it was renamed in honor of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. It grew from a stilt settlement on the Brunei River, today's Kampong Ayer.
  2. Phnom Penh Phnom Penh is Cambodia's capital and most populous city, where the Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers meet. The nation's capital since 1865, it is named for Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple, and for Lady Penh, who founded the city.
  3. Dili Dili is East Timor's capital and largest city, which the United Nations lists as Timor-Leste. It lies on the north coast of the island of Timor, hemmed in by mountains, and became the capital of Portuguese Timor in 1769.
  4. Jakarta Jakarta is Indonesia's capital and largest city, on the northwest coast of Java. Nusantara, a city under construction on Borneo, is planned to take over once it is complete. Until the move happens, Nusantara is marked wrong.
  5. Vientiane Vientiane is Laos' capital and largest city, beside the Mekong near the border with Thailand. Under French rule it was the administrative capital. Pha That Luang, a Buddhist icon, stands in the city.
  6. Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia under the constitution, and Parliament and the king's residence are here. The federal government moved to Putrajaya in 1999 and the courts in 2003, so typing Putrajaya counts too.
  7. Naypyidaw Naypyidaw is the capital of Myanmar, an entirely planned city that officially replaced Yangon on November 6, 2005. Yangon, once called Rangoon, is still the most populous city and the usual wrong answer. Typing Nay Pyi Taw counts too.
  8. Manila Manila is the capital of the Philippines, on Luzon island, along Manila Bay's eastern shore. Quezon City, also in Metro Manila, has more people. The Spanish began building the walled district of Intramuros here in 1571.
  9. Singapore Singapore is a city-state, so the country and its capital share one name. It lies about one degree north of the equator, off the Malay Peninsula's southern tip. Stamford Raffles set up a British trading post here in 1819.
  10. Bangkok Bangkok is Thailand's capital and largest city, in the delta of the Chao Phraya River. It grew from a small trading post into the site of two capitals, Thonburi in 1767 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Its Thai name, Krung Thep, counts too.
  11. Hanoi Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, in the north of the country on the Red River. Ho Chi Minh City has more people and is the usual wrong answer. Hanoi was founded as Thăng Long in 1010 and was given its present name in 1831.

How it works

This Southeast Asia capitals quiz names a country, from Myanmar to the islands of Indonesia, and you pick its capital, say Vientiane or Phnom Penh. All 11 countries of the region are asked in one round.

Which 11 countries, and which answers are young

The 11 are Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam: the full United Nations list for South-eastern Asia, all member states, and every shape you can tap here. Two answers are young: Myanmar made Naypyidaw its capital in 2005, and East Timor, whose capital is Dili, became a sovereign state in 2002.

Eight shapes to tap and three rings

In Find it eight countries are tapped directly. Brunei, Singapore and East Timor are specks at this scale, so each has a ring on a leader line. Every round asks all 11, and Practise the ones you missed brings back only those.

  • Three capitals are not their country's most populous city: Naypyidaw trails Yangon, Hanoi trails Ho Chi Minh City, and Manila trails Quezon City.
  • Two capitals stand on the Mekong: Vientiane in Laos, close to the Thai border, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia, where the Tonlé Sap joins it.
  • Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, is the longest answer to type. One slip is forgiven, so Bandar Sri Begawan passes.

Questions and answers

Is Jakarta still the capital of Indonesia?

Yes, as of September 19, 2026. The list of national capitals this page follows still gives Jakarta, on the island of Java. Nusantara, a city under construction on Borneo, is planned to take over once complete. Until the list changes, Nusantara is marked wrong.

Why does Malaysia take two answers?

Kuala Lumpur is the capital under the constitution, and Parliament and the king's residence are there. The federal government moved to Putrajaya in 1999, and the courts followed in 2003. Putrajaya is the administrative and judicial capital, so both names count when typed.

Is it East Timor or Timor-Leste?

Both names mean the same country. The United Nations lists it as Timor-Leste, and the drawing prints East Timor, the other name in common use. Either way the answer here is Dili, on the north coast of the island of Timor.
