How this list was compiled: The 47 countries are the member states of the United Nations that the UN files under its five regions of Asia: https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states and United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, both checked 2026-09-19. Capitals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Asia, checked 2026-09-19. One capital is left out because the source marks it as claimed; that country is asked by name only. Shapes of the drawing that are dependencies, that the points file flags as disputed, or that the top edge cuts off are not on this list and are never asked. Positions in the hints were read off the drawing. The two capitals of Sri Lanka, both accepted: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka, checked 2026-09-19. Astana named Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana, checked 2026-09-19. The second and later sentences of each detail line were read on 2026-09-19 in the lead of that country's article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the country's name as the quiz labels it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_(country) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland for those two); no detail line names a flagged shape or describes a border that is contested. The 24 countries on the list

The United Nations has no region called Monsoon Asia, so this page states its own list. South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. East Asia: China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea. Check them against your class list.

Three regions and five rings

Three sets under Start from shorten the round under their United Nations names: Eastern Asia (5 countries), South-Eastern Asia (11) and Southern Asia (8). Bhutan, Brunei, East Timor, Maldives and Singapore are too small to tap, so each has a numbered ring. The five countries of Central Asia are drawn and never asked.

  • Mainland Southeast Asia, west to east: Myanmar, Thailand, Laos stacked on Cambodia, then S-shaped Vietnam. Only Laos has no coast.
  • Three countries share Borneo: Indonesia holds most, Malaysia the north side, and ringed Brunei sits on the north coast.
  • Between India and China: narrow Nepal to the west, ringed Bhutan to the east. Bangladesh lies south of Bhutan.

Questions and answers

Which countries are in Monsoon Asia?

There is no official list. This page asks 24: eight in South Asia, eleven in Southeast Asia and five in East Asia. The list follows regions, not rainfall, so Afghanistan counts with South Asia and Mongolia with East Asia.

Why is it called Monsoon Asia?

Monsoon comes from the Arabic word mawsim, meaning season. It names winds that blow from the sea in summer and from the land in winter. In India the summer monsoon usually reaches the southwest coast in early June and covers the country by mid-July.

Is Iran part of Monsoon Asia?

Not on this page. The United Nations files Iran under Southern Asia, which gives that region nine countries. This page asks eight and leaves Iran to the map of Southwest and Central Asia. Afghanistan is asked on both pages.
