How this list was compiled: The 47 countries are the member states of the United Nations that the UN statistics office files under its five regions of Asia: the member list at https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states and United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, both checked 2026-09-19. M49 files the Russian Federation under Eastern Europe, so it is not on this list. Areas, and the largest and smallest countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_countries_by_area, checked 2026-09-19; an area that the source gives with a note about a disputed territory is not stated. The five countries
All five were republics of the Soviet Union until 1991, and all five are landlocked. Kazakhstan is the largest, and Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked: every one of its neighbors is landlocked too. Their neighbors, from Russia to Afghanistan, are drawn without numbers.
All five names end in -stan, from a Persian word for place or land, so students tell them apart by the start of each name.
