Where each neighbor lies
Pakistan runs along the east and south, and Iran along the west. Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan line the north, from west to east. China touches Afghanistan only at the tip of the thin strip in the northeast. Each neighbor is cut off by the edge of the map.
The thin strip in the northeast
The strip is the Wakhan Corridor. On this map Tajikistan lies north of it, and the land to its south is drawn as part of Pakistan. It took shape after the Durand Line agreement of 1893, which also drew today's border with Pakistan.
- Afghanistan is landlocked: no sea touches it. Have students mark Kabul, the capital, before they name the neighbors.
Questions and answers
Which countries surround Afghanistan?
Six are numbered on this map: Pakistan (east and south), Iran (west), Turkmenistan (northwest), Uzbekistan (north), Tajikistan (northeast) and China at the far northeastern tip. India, at the right edge, has no number.
Does the map show disputed borders?
Some borders on this map are disputed. The map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, and does not take a side. Kashmir is drawn along the line of control, and the Durand Line, the border with Pakistan, is largely unrecognized in Afghanistan.
