How this list was compiled: The 47 countries are the member states of the United Nations that the UN statistics office files under its five regions of Asia: the member list at https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states and United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, both checked 2026-09-19. M49 files the Russian Federation under Eastern Europe, so it is not on this list. Capitals, and which countries other lists count with Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Asia, checked 2026-09-19. One capital is left out because that source marks it as claimed; that country is asked by name only. Areas, and the largest and smallest countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_countries_by_area, checked 2026-09-19; an area that the source gives with a note about a disputed territory is not stated. Landlocked countries, their neighbors, Kazakhstan as the largest landlocked country, Kyrgyzstan as the one farthest from any ocean, Uzbekistan as doubly landlocked: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landlocked_country, checked 2026-09-19. Island countries and what each is made of, Indonesia as the largest island country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_island_countries, checked 2026-09-19. Neighbor counts of China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Brunei and Timor-Leste: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_territories_by_number_of_land_borders, checked 2026-09-19. Countries on the Caspian Sea: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caspian_Sea, checked 2026-09-19. Borneo as the third largest island and how it is shared: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borneo, checked 2026-09-19. Shapes of the drawing that are not member states of the United Nations, or that the points file flags, are not on this list and are never asked. Positions in the hints were read off the drawing. Sri Lanka, the legislative capital and the executive and commercial capital beside it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_multiple_capitals and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Jayawardenepura_Kotte, checked 2026-09-19; Colombo is accepted as a typed capital. A blank map of Asia countries, region by region

The countries fall into five regions: Western Asia (17), Southern Asia (9), South-eastern Asia (11), Eastern Asia (5) and Central Asia (5). Twelve are too small to write inside, from Singapore to Bahrain, so their numbers sit in rings.

  • As an Asia map worksheet, print Numbered and give each group one region, such as the five countries of Central Asia.
