How it works

This physical map of Southeast Asia labels 13 features with no country borders: five seas, five islands and peninsulas, and the Mekong, Irrawaddy and Salween rivers. Read the names first, then quiz yourself on them.

Read the full guide

Three rounds: seas, land, rivers

The seas and gulf go first, then Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the two peninsulas, then the three rivers. The Irrawaddy and the Salween run side by side down Myanmar: the Irrawaddy is the western one.

What the map leaves out

Luzon, Mindanao, Sulawesi, New Guinea, the Strait of Malacca and the Chao Phraya are not asked here, so check your class list.

  • Borneo is the one island shared by three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Questions and answers

What is on a physical map of Southeast Asia?

Land and water with no borders. Here that is the South China Sea, Andaman Sea, Java Sea, Philippine Sea and Gulf of Thailand; Borneo, Sumatra and Java; the Indochina and Malay peninsulas; and the Mekong, Irrawaddy and Salween.

Can I print a Southeast Asia physical map labeled?

Yes. The labeled print writes all 13 names on the map; the blank print numbers them with lines to write on.

Which countries does the Mekong flow through?

Six: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It rises on the Tibetan Plateau and runs south through the middle of the mainland.
