How this list was compiled: The Spanish word for a person from each place (gentilicio): Real Academia Española and Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, Diccionario panhispánico de dudas, the appendix "Lista de países y capitales, con sus gentilicios", https://www.rae.es/dpd/ayuda/paises-y-capitales-con-sus-gentilicios. rae.es answered automated requests with HTTP 403 on 2026-10-01, so the list was read in the Internet Archive copy of 2025-08-23, https://web.archive.org/web/20250823085017/https://www.rae.es/dpd/ayuda/paises-y-capitales-con-sus-gentilicios, read 2026-10-01 (the copy that the site's world map in Spanish follows). Second text, read 2026-10-01: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Gentilicios, which gives the same first word for all 21 and adds guineano for Equatorial Guinea and mejicano for Mexico (both accepted when typed). How it works

This Spanish speaking countries nationalities quiz names a country, lights it on the map, and you pick its nationality in Spanish, such as hondureño. It asks the 20 Spanish-speaking countries and Puerto Rico. Find it shows a word and you tap its country.

Words with two forms and words with one

Most of these words end in -o for a man and -a for a woman: mexicano, mexicana. Español adds an a: española. Two have one form for everyone: costarricense and nicaragüense. None takes a capital letter; the quiz prints them as the Spanish language academies' list does.

Words that do not match the country's name

Guatemala gives guatemalteco and Honduras hondureño. Costa Rica and Puerto Rico each become one word: costarricense, puertorriqueño. El Salvador loses its article: salvadoreño. Equatorial Guinea gives ecuatoguineano, and the Dominican Republic dominicano.

  • When you type an answer, either form counts, and so does a word without its accent mark: salvadoreno, panamena.

Questions and answers

Why is Puerto Rico in the quiz?

The academies' list gives its word, puertorriqueño, so the quiz asks it. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, not a country. The list also allows portorriqueño, which counts when typed.

Which list do the nationalities follow?

The list of countries, capitals and gentilicios in the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas, the usage dictionary of the Spanish language academies. Where it gives two words for one place, the first is asked and the second counts.

What is someone from Equatorial Guinea called in Spanish?

Ecuatoguineano, or ecuatoguineana for a woman. Equatorial Guinea is the one country of the quiz in Africa; the map shows it in a box beside South America.

Can I print it as a worksheet?

Yes. Open More options before you answer and press Print blank: the map prints with a number on each country and a numbered line for each nationality. The labeled print is the answer key.
