How this list was compiled: The countries are the member states of the United Nations that the UN files under its four regions of Europe, plus Cyprus, a European Union member that the UN files under Western Asia: https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states and United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/, both checked 2026-09-19. The 27 members of the European Union and the year each joined: https://european-union.europa.eu/principles-countries-history/eu-countries_en, checked 2026-09-19. Capitals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Europe, checked 2026-09-19. The Balkans group: there is no agreed list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkans, checked 2026-09-19); this one is the former Yugoslav states, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Shapes of the drawing that are dependencies, that the points file flags, or that are not member states are not on this list and are never asked. Positions in the hints were read off the drawing; the "largest shape" hint was checked against the areas of the drawn shapes. The second and later sentences of each detail line were read on 2026-09-19 in the lead of that country's article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the country's name as the quiz labels it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_(country) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland for those two); no detail line names a flagged shape or describes a border that is contested. How it works

This Southern Europe map quiz asks the 14 countries the United Nations files under that name, Portugal to Greece. Tap each country as it is named. In Name it, type the one that lights up, then its capital.

The 14 countries and the list behind them

The page follows the United Nations list: Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain. Only member states are asked, so Vatican City, a UN observer, is left out. Other lists add Monaco or Cyprus, which the UN files under Western Europe and Western Asia.

The Balkans set, then the capitals

Pick Balkans under Start from and the round narrows to eight: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. Press it again for all 14. The Balkan countries map quiz asks ten on a map of the peninsula alone. In Name it, each country is followed by its capital, and a question scores only when both are right.

  • Three are too small to tap, so each has a ring: Andorra, San Marino inside Italy, Malta south of Sicily.
  • Down the Adriatic's east shore: Slovenia, Croatia, a 20-kilometer strip of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia again, Montenegro, then Albania.
  • Four of the 14 have no coast: Andorra, San Marino, Serbia and North Macedonia, the one directly north of Greece.

Questions and answers

Why are Bulgaria and Romania not in the Balkans round?

This page asks the countries the United Nations files under Southern Europe, and it files Bulgaria and Romania under Eastern Europe. The Balkans have no single agreed list. The name comes from the Balkan Mountains, which run through Bulgaria, so many lists include it.

Are Turkey and Cyprus part of Southern Europe?

Not on the United Nations list, which files both under Western Asia, so neither is asked here. Some lists count Cyprus with Southern Europe, and East Thrace, a part of Turkey, lies on the Balkan Peninsula. Both are on the European countries quiz.

Which capitals does the Southern Europe quiz ask?

All 14, each after its country in Name it: Lisbon, Madrid, Andorra la Vella, Rome, San Marino, Valletta, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Podgorica, Tirana, Skopje and Athens. Valletta is the smallest capital city in the European Union.
