How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01. Ontario has no first-level units below it in the map source, so the sheet numbers the province, its five neighbors, six lakes, two bays, two rivers and six cities. Every Canadian name was read on 2026-10-01 in the Canadian Geographical Names Database of Natural Resources Canada (https://geogratis.gc.ca/services/geoname/en/geonames: Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec as official names of a province; Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor, Thunder Bay and Timmins as cities; Sudbury as a place inside the city of Greater Sudbury; Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake of the Woods; Hudson Bay, James Bay; Ottawa River, Albany River) and in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario (Toronto as provincial capital and largest city, Ottawa as national capital; Manitoba, Quebec, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York; Hudson Bay and James Bay; the four Great Lakes on its boundary, Lake of the Woods; the Ottawa River), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes (Lake Michigan as the one lake entirely within the United States) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albany_River (mouth on James Bay). Minnesota, Michigan and New York: the U.S. Census Bureau's list of states (https://www2.census.gov/geo/docs/reference/state.txt). Lake Michigan: the State of Michigan's Great Lakes page (https://www.michigan.gov/egle/about/organization/water-resources/great-lakes-coordination). The source draws the province across the lakes to the international boundary; the lakes are painted over it. Georgian Bay is drawn as part of Lake Huron and carries no number. Left off so that every name on the Named sheet has room: London, Kingston, Hamilton, Lake Nipigon and the St. Lawrence and Niagara rivers, all in the source and in the names database. Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and the St. Marys River are not drawn, and the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is not in the source. The points of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and New York are set by the spec, clear of their neighbors. Lake Ontario is written L. Ontario and the Ottawa River Ottawa R. on the map; the key has the full names. The points file gives Ottawa a ring beside its dot, because the dot lies on the river line; the dataset leaves the ring out, so that no line is printed beside the dot on the Blank sheet or through the name on the Named sheet. Ottawa's number and name stand on its dot. Licence: public domain (Natural Earth terms of use: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/)
