How it works
This Great Lakes map quiz asks the five lakes first: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Two more rounds zoom in on the rivers that join them, then on Georgian Bay and four smaller lakes of the basin.

Round one is a 5 Great Lakes map quiz
Lake Superior is the largest and the farthest north and west. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron stand at the same level, joined at the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Erie is the southernmost, and Lake Ontario is the last in the chain.
Follow the water downstream
Lake Superior drains through the St. Marys River into Lake Huron. The St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River lead on to Lake Erie, the Niagara River to Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic. The Detroit River and the Straits of Mackinac are not shapes of the drawing, so they are not asked.
Georgian Bay is part of Lake Huron and lies entirely in Ontario.
The short rivers and the small lakes are answered at a ring beside them.
Lake St. Clair is the small lake between Lake Huron and Lake Erie; the St. Clair River flows into it.
Questions and answers
What are the five Great Lakes on the map?
Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Together they are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area. Four are shared by the United States and Canada; Lake Michigan lies entirely within the United States.
Which Great Lake is the largest?
Lake Superior. By surface area it is the world's largest freshwater lake and third-largest by volume. Lake Erie is the five's shallowest and the smallest by volume.
Why is Lake St. Clair not one of the Great Lakes?
It belongs to the Great Lakes system but is not counted among the five. With the St. Clair River and the Detroit River it connects Lake Huron to Lake Erie.
Is there a Great Lakes blank map to print?
Yes. Before the first question, open More options: the blank print numbers every feature and leaves a line for each name. The states and provinces around the lakes are drawn without names, as on a blank map of the Great Lakes region.
