Start here: 6 main parts 6

  1. Baseline The rearmost line at each end of the court. It runs parallel to the net. The server starts behind it, between the center mark and the sideline.
  2. Service line The line that marks the back of the service boxes. Parallel to the net, 21 ft (6.4 m) from it.
  3. Center service line Divides the two service boxes of each side. It runs from the net to the service line.
  4. Singles sideline The inner side line on each side. In singles the court is 27 ft (8.23 m) wide, out to these lines.
  5. Doubles sideline The outer side line on each side. In doubles the court is 36 ft (10.97 m) wide, out to these lines.
  6. Net Runs across the middle. It is 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m) high at the posts, 3 ft (0.914 m) in the center.

The areas: 3 3

  1. Alley The strip between the singles and doubles sidelines on each side. Used only in doubles. In Britain it is the tramlines.
  2. Service boxes A serve must land in the box diagonally opposite. The four boxes are bounded by the net, the service line, the singles sideline and the center service line.
  3. Back court The area from service line to baseline at each end.

Marks and posts: 3 3

  1. Center mark The short 4-inch mark at the middle of each baseline. It divides the court into halves for serving.
  2. T The T shape where the center service line meets the service line.
  3. Net posts Hold the net up at each end. They stand just outside the court.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-09-27. Wikipedia, Tennis court, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_court (citing the ITF Rules of Tennis, rule 1, The Court): the court is 78 ft long, 27 ft wide for singles and 36 ft for doubles; the net divides it into two equal ends, 3 ft 6 in high at the posts and 3 ft in the centre; the service line is 21 ft from the net; terminology: the alley or tramlines (only used in doubles), back court, baseline, center service line, center mark (the 4-inch mark in the middle of the baseline), service box (bounded by the singles sideline, service line and net), service line, and the T. Wikipedia, Tennis, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis : the serve is hit into the diagonally opposite service box; the server stands behind the baseline, from the centre mark to the sideline. How it works

This blank tennis court map shows a doubles court from above: every line, the net and both posts, and no name anywhere. Twelve label lines wait for one, from the baseline across each end to the alley down each side.

Twelve label lines and a word bank

Five lines leave the left edge of the court and seven the right, and each ends in a dot on its part. Word bank, in the order the numbered copy counts them: baseline, service line, center service line, center mark, singles sideline, doubles sideline, alley, service boxes, back court, T, net, net posts.

Lines that get swapped on a blank court

Two long lines run down each side: the inner one is the singles sideline, the outer one the doubles sideline. Two lines cross each half: the baseline at the very end, and the service line nearer the net, which stops at the singles sidelines. The short tick on the baseline is the center mark; the center service line is the long one that crosses the net.

  • For a younger class, ask for six names only: baseline, service line, center service line, singles sideline, doubles sideline and net.
  • The net and the center service line are drawn once. The rest come in pairs, the service boxes in fours; one name covers each.
  • The court keeps the proportions in the rules, so the blank copy also serves for sketching a drill or marking where players stand.

Questions and answers

What is the T on a tennis court?

The T shape made where the center service line meets the service line, one on each side of the net. It is also called the middle T. On this sheet a small circle marks each one.

What is the center mark on a tennis court?

The short mark at the middle of each baseline, 4 inches long, also called the hash mark. It splits the court into halves for serving: the server stands behind the baseline, from the center mark to the sideline.

What is the back court in tennis?

The space from baseline to service line at each end of the court. On this sheet it is the wide band behind the service boxes.

Is there a labeled copy of the blank tennis court map?

Yes. The answer key is this court with a name at the end of every line. Three are shortened there: Center line, Singles line and Doubles line. The numbered copy's key spells all twelve out in a list.
