How it works
Label the distillation apparatus diagram by number: eight rings, each with a line for its name. Four are on the boiling side at the left, four on the cooling and collecting side.

Distillation apparatus word bank
In alphabetical order: condenser, distillate, distilling flask, receiving flask, still head, thermometer, thermometer adapter, vacuum adapter.
Numbers that get swapped
Three lines end close together at the top left: 2 is the thin marked rod (thermometer), 8 the short collar it passes through (thermometer adapter) and 6 the upright tube under the collar (still head). At the right, 4 ends on the glass of the cone-shaped flask (receiving flask) and 5 on the liquid inside it (distillate). 3 is the round flask in the heater (distilling flask). 1 is the long sloping tube in its jacket (condenser), 7 the bent tube at its low end (vacuum adapter).
- When marking, round-bottom flask or boiling flask is right on line 3, and receiver or collecting flask on line 4.
- The heater under the flask, the two water hoses and the stands are drawn but carry no number.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a simple and a fractional distillation apparatus?
In simple distillation the vapor is led straight into the condenser, as on this sheet. A fractional set-up adds a fractionating column on top of the distilling flask, and the vapor climbs through it first.
What is the still pot in a distillation apparatus?
Another name for the distilling flask: the pot in which the mixture is heated. On the worksheet it is number 3, the round flask at the left.
Where does the thermometer go in a distillation apparatus?
On top of the still head, held by the thermometer adapter, and not in the boiling liquid. On the worksheet it is number 2 and its adapter number 8.
What is the vacuum adapter used for in distillation?
Its bend turns the liquid from the condenser down into the receiving flask. The small stub on its side is a connection that a vacuum pump can be fitted to.
What type of condenser is used in simple distillation?
On this sheet, a Liebig condenser: a straight glass tube inside a water jacket. The vapor enters at its upper end and the liquid drips out of the lower end. Liebig condenser and water condenser are both right on line 1.
