Start with the first words
Helmet, coat, gloves, pants, boots and hose come first. The face shield, hood, air tank, face mask, reflective stripes and nozzle follow.
Check the answers
Print the answer key lists every name beside its number. Quiz yourself on this worksheet lights one piece of gear at a time and offers four names.
The air tank, the face mask and the thin line between them are one set: a breathing apparatus.
Questions and answers
What does a firefighter wear?
A helmet, a hood, a thick coat and pants, gloves and tall boots. For smoke, a firefighter adds a face mask fed by an air tank on the back. This worksheet rings each one.
What is a firefighter's gear called?
Bunker gear or turnout gear. The name bunker gear comes from the pants and boots, which were traditionally kept by the firefighters' bunks at the station, ready to pull on.
What are the stripes on a firefighter's coat for?
They are reflective stripes. They reflect light, which helps other people see the firefighter.
What is the tank on a firefighter's back?
An air tank. It is the cylinder of a self-contained breathing apparatus: air flows from it through a regulator into the face mask, so the firefighter can breathe in places filled with smoke.
