How it works
This parts of a metal roof diagram shows a standing-seam roof three ways: from the gable end, one slope face-on, and one seam cut across. Start with the 6 main parts.

Panels and seams
The roof is laid in long panels running from ridge to eave. Their edges lock together in raised standing seams, over panel clips screwed to the deck, so no screw goes through the panel.
Trim and flashing
The ridge cap covers the peak over foam closure strips. Gable trim finishes the sloped edges and eave trim the bottom edge, over the gutter. Flashing seals the valley and the walls of a chimney.
- The panel clips are hidden inside the seams, so a standing-seam roof has no exposed screws through its panels.
Questions and answers
What is a standing seam metal roof?
A roof of long metal panels whose edges are raised and locked together in seams that stand above the flat. The panels are held by hidden clips, not screws through the face.
What is the trim at the top of a metal roof called?
The ridge cap. It covers the joint where the two slopes meet, and foam closure strips under it seal the gaps between the panels.
What is the difference between gable trim and eave trim?
Gable trim, or rake trim, runs along the sloping side edges of the roof. Eave trim, or drip edge, runs along the bottom edge and drips water into the gutter.
