Start here: 7 main parts 7

  1. Ridge The top edge where two roof slopes meet.
  2. Eaves The lower, level edge of a sloped roof.
  3. Gable The triangular top of an end wall, up to the ridge.
  4. Shingles The overlapping pieces that cover the roof and shed water.
  5. Gutter The trough that carries rain from the eaves to the downspouts.
  6. Downspout The pipe that drains the gutter down to the ground.
  7. Dormer A framed window that stands out through the roof slope.

The house 3

  1. Rake The sloped edge of the roof over the gable end.
  2. Soffit The finished underside of the eaves.
  3. Flashing Metal that seals joints where the roof meets a chimney or wall.

From above: a hip roof 2

  1. Hip A sloping line where two roof planes meet at an outside corner.
  2. Valley The inside angle where two roof slopes meet; water runs down it.

The layers 3

  1. Rafters Sloping framing from the ridge down to the wall, under the deck.
  2. Deck (sheathing) The boards fixed over the rafters that the roofing goes on.
  3. Underlayment A water-resistant sheet laid on the deck under the shingles.

How it works

The parts of a roof on three drawings: a house with a gable roof, an L-shaped hip roof from above, and the layers cut away. Start with the 7 main parts, then the house, the plan and the layers.

Edges and shapes

The ridge runs along the top, and the eaves are the lower edge that overhangs the wall; the soffit is their underside. On a gable end, the sloping edge is the rake. On a hip roof, hips run to the outside corners and a valley into each inside corner.

Water and layers

The gutter catches rain at the eaves and the downspout takes it to the ground. Flashing seals joints round a chimney. From the bottom up, the rafters carry the deck, then the underlayment, then the shingles.

  • A hip and a valley are both lines where two slopes meet: a hip sticks out, a valley dips in and carries water.
