How it works

What are the parts of a ring called? The shank is the band round the finger, rising at the shoulders to the bridge. On top, the head or setting holds the center stone in its prongs, over the open gallery.

Parts of a ring setting

The head is the metal holder above the band. Its prongs, or claws, grip the center stone at its widest point, and the gallery is the open space under the stone that lets light in. A bezel setting wraps a metal rim round the stone instead of prongs.

The band

The shank runs round the finger. Its upper parts, the shoulders, rise towards the setting and often carry small side stones, and the bridge joins the two sides under the head.

Questions and answers

What is the bottom of a ring called?

The shank, or band: the part that circles the finger. Ring sizing is done on the shank, usually at the bottom.

What holds the diamond on a ring?

The setting. In a prong setting, metal claws grip the stone at its widest point; in a bezel setting, a metal rim wraps all round it.

What are the parts of a wedding ring?

A plain wedding ring is all shank. A ring with stones adds shoulders, a bridge, a head with prongs or a bezel, and the stones themselves.
