How it works
This parts of a dirt bike diagram shows a motocross bike from both sides, because the two sides differ: the kick starter and rear brake pedal are on the right, the shift lever and chain on the left.

Three drawings
View 1 is the right side: fork, fuel tank, seat, fenders, engine, radiator, exhaust pipe, kick starter, rear brake pedal, rear shock and swingarm. View 2 is the left side: the front brake disc and its caliper, the shift lever, the drive chain, and the spokes, rim and tire of a wheel. View 3 is the handlebar from the seat, with the clutch lever, the front brake lever and the throttle grip.
Hands and feet
The left hand pulls the clutch lever and the left foot moves the shift lever. The right hand twists the throttle grip and pulls the front brake lever, and the right foot presses the rear brake pedal.
- A motocross bike has long-travel suspension at both ends: the front fork, and the rear shock with its swingarm.
- The front brake disc is on the left of its wheel on this bike, and the rear one on the right.
Questions and answers
What are the main parts of a dirt bike?
Frame, engine, fuel tank and seat; front fork, rear shock and swingarm; two wheels with knobby tires, spokes and rims; a disc brake on each wheel; the drive chain; the exhaust pipe; and the controls on the handlebars and by each foot.
What is the lever on the left handlebar of a dirt bike?
The clutch lever. Pulling it cuts the engine's drive to the back wheel, so the rider can change gear with the shift lever by the left foot. The lever on the right handlebar is the front brake.
What is a swingarm on a dirt bike?
The arm that holds the rear wheel. Its front end pivots on the frame, so the wheel can move up and down over bumps, and the rear shock controls that movement.
How is a dirt bike different from a mini bike?
A dirt bike has a gearbox worked by a clutch lever and a shift lever, suspension at both ends, a radiator on liquid-cooled models and a kick starter. A mini bike is a smaller machine with a pull starter.
