The sport bike
The fairing is the shell over the front and sides, and the windshield sits on top of it. The headlight is set in its nose, with a mirror above and a turn signal on the side. Behind the fairing come the fuel tank, the rider seat and the passenger seat. The tail light and the license plate light are at the back. Low down are the front fender, a footpeg and the muffler.
The cruiser
The cruiser here has no fairing. It carries a saddlebag beside the rear wheel and a backrest for the passenger. Its rear fender is deep, and a long exhaust pipe runs back from the engine.
A fairing that covers only the upper part of the bike is called a half fairing.
Questions and answers
What are the body parts of a motorcycle called?
The main ones are the fairing, the windshield, the fuel tank, the seats and the fenders. Fittings on them include the headlight, mirrors, turn signals and tail light. Touring bikes often add saddlebags and a passenger backrest.
What is a fairing on a motorcycle?
A shell fitted over the frame, mostly on sport and racing bikes, to turn the wind aside and cut drag. A full fairing covers the upper and lower parts of the bike; a half fairing covers only the upper part.
What is the difference between a fairing and a windshield?
The fairing is the solid shell. The windshield is the clear screen, usually built into the top of the fairing. A windshield can also be fitted on its own to a bike with no fairing.
What are the bags on the side of a motorcycle called?
Saddlebags, also called panniers. They mount on each side of the rear of the bike, under the passenger seat. Some are hard cases and some are soft bags.
