The whole bike 11

  1. Frame Mini bikes have a simple, boxy frame of steel tube.
  2. Engine Usually a small four-stroke engine of the kind used on garden tillers.
  3. Seat A mini bike has a low seat and tall handlebars.
  4. Handlebars They rise high above the low frame and carry the controls.
  5. Front fork The front axle passes through its two legs. The handlebars clamp to its top.
  6. Tires Mini bike wheels are small; tire pressure is checked before each ride.
  7. Front fender It bolts to brackets on the front fork, just above the tire.
  8. Rear fender It sits behind the seat, over the rear tire.
  9. Foot pegs Both feet stay on the pegs while the bike is moving.
  10. Kickstand It is put up before riding off.
  11. Rear brake Some mini bikes use a drum brake here, others a disc.

Engine 4

  1. Pull starter With the stop switch on, pulling its cord starts the engine.
  2. Fuel tank Its cap unscrews to fill it.
  3. Air filter It keeps dust and dirt out of the engine. It needs cleaning often.
  4. Muffler The engine's exhaust leaves through its outlet.

Chain drive 4

  1. Centrifugal clutch As the engine speeds up, shoes inside swing out. They grip the drum.
  2. Chain It carries the drive from the clutch to the rear sprocket.
  3. Rear sprocket The chain turns it, and it turns the rear wheel.
  4. Chain guard It covers the chain; hands stay clear of chains and sprockets.

Handlebar controls 4

  1. Throttle grip Turning it toward the rider raises the engine speed.
  2. Brake lever Pulling it toward the grip applies the rear brake.
  3. Engine stop switch The engine starts only when it is on; off stops it.
  4. Hand grip The left hand holds it and pulls the brake lever toward it.

How it works

A mini bike is a small off-road motorbike: a steel tube frame, small wheels, a low seat and a pull-start engine that drives the back wheel through a clutch and a chain. These four drawings name 23 of its parts.

Four views of one bike

View 1 is the whole bike from its right side, front to the right. View 2 enlarges the engine. View 3 is the other side of the back wheel with the clutch cover taken off, so the clutch and chain show. View 4 is the handlebars as the rider sees them.

From engine to back wheel

The centrifugal clutch sits on the engine shaft. At low engine speed it stays disengaged, so the engine can idle while the bike stands still. As the engine speeds up, the shoes inside swing out and grip the drum. The drum's small sprocket pulls the chain, and the chain turns the rear sprocket on the back wheel.

  • The throttle is the right grip. The brake lever is on the left and works the rear brake.
  • To start the engine, the stop switch goes to on, then the starter cord is pulled.

Questions and answers

What are the main parts of a mini bike?

A steel tube frame, a front fork and handlebars, two small wheels, a seat, and a small engine that drives the back wheel through a centrifugal clutch, a chain and a rear sprocket.

What does the clutch do on a mini bike?

It connects the engine to the chain by itself. At idle it is disengaged, so the engine runs without moving the bike. As engine speed rises, its shoes swing out, grip the drum and drive the chain.

Where is the brake on a mini bike?

At the back wheel. Pulling the lever in front of the left hand grip applies it. Depending on the bike it is a drum brake or a disc brake.

What kind of engine does a mini bike have?

Traditionally a small four-stroke engine with a horizontal crankshaft, the kind also fitted to garden tillers. A pull on the starter cord starts it.
