How it works
The parts of a mini split, or parts of a minisplit, come in two halves: an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit, joined by two refrigerant pipes and a cable. Another name is split type air conditioner.

Indoor half, then outdoor half
Numbers 1 to 9 are indoors: the indoor unit with its front panel lifted, an air filter, the evaporator coil behind it, the fan, the louver, the display, the remote control and the drain hose. Numbers 10 to 16 are outdoors: the outdoor unit and its fan, the condenser coil behind the fan and down one side, the compressor in the cut-away, the service valves, and the refrigerant pipes and connecting cable that run up to the wall.
- A unit that also heats is a heat pump: the same parts plus a reversing valve, which swaps the jobs of the two coils.
- Makers' names differ: louver, flap or vane; connecting cable or communication cable; refrigerant pipes or line set.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a split type air conditioner?
Two units and what joins them. Indoor unit: front panel, air filter, evaporator coil, fan, louver, display and drain hose. Outdoor unit: compressor, condenser coil and fan. Between them: two refrigerant pipes and a connecting cable.
How does a mini split work?
The indoor fan pulls room air through the filter and over the cold evaporator coil. The refrigerant carries the heat through the pipes to the outdoor unit, where the compressor and the condenser coil give it off to the outside air.
Is a mini split the same as a split type aircon?
Yes. The parts of a split type aircon are the ones drawn here: mini split, ductless split and split type aircon all name the wall-mounted kind. The parts of a split AC system with ducts differ indoors; that kind is on the air conditioner page.
Why does a mini split have a drain hose?
Water from the room air condenses on the cold evaporator coil. The drain hose carries that water outdoors.
