How it works
A kick scooter is a deck on two wheels with a handlebar; the rider pushes off the ground with one foot. These drawings name 13 parts on a one-piece stunt scooter and on a folding scooter.

Three drawings
The first is a stunt scooter from the side, front to the right: deck, wheels, brake and fork. The second is the same scooter from the front, to show the T-shaped handlebars, the grips and the clamp. The third is a folding scooter, with a dashed line where its steering column folds down.
What holds the front together
The fork holds the front wheel and goes up through the head tube. The headset, a ring of bearings at each end of the head tube, lets the fork turn. The handlebars slide onto the top of the fork and the clamp squeezes them tight, so turning the bars turns the front wheel.
- A stunt scooter does not fold. Its head tube is welded to the deck, which removes the play of a folding joint.
- To slow down, step on the brake over the back wheel.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a scooter called?
From the top: handlebars with a grip on each end, the clamp, the headset and head tube, and the fork that holds the front wheel. Then the deck with its grip tape, the back wheel and the brake over it.
What is the part of a scooter you stand on called?
The deck. Its top is usually covered with grip tape, a rough sheet like the one on a skateboard, which keeps shoes from slipping.
Where is the brake on a scooter?
Over the back wheel. On most kick scooters the brake is the rear fender: stepping on it with the back foot slows the scooter.
What is the difference between a stunt scooter and a folding scooter?
A folding scooter has a hinged joint at the front of the deck, so the handlebars fold down for carrying. A stunt scooter, also called a pro scooter, is built in one piece with one-piece bars, to stand up to tricks.
