How it works
A skatepark is a space built for skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters and skates. These two drawings name 18 parts: the curved ramps on one side and the street-style pieces on the other.

The transition side
The first drawing has the curved ramps. A quarter pipe curves up to a deck, with a metal coping along its top edge. Two quarter pipes face to face, with a flat bottom between them, make a half-pipe. Back to back they make a spine, and at an angle they make a hip. A bowl is curved walls all the way round.
The street side
The second drawing copies things skaters find in a city: a stair set with a handrail and a hubba, a bank, a ledge and a manual pad. The funbox and the pyramid are made of banks round a flat top.
- The curve of a ramp is its transition; skaters call curved ramps transition, or tranny, and everything else street.
- On a half-pipe drawing the deck is the flat top, not the floor: the floor is the flat bottom.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a skatepark called?
The curved ramps are quarter pipes, half-pipes, spines, hips and bowls, with a deck and coping at the top. The street pieces are stairs, handrails, ledges, hubbas, banks, manual pads, flat rails, funboxes and pyramids.
What is the metal bar at the top of a skate ramp called?
Coping. It is a metal tube that runs along the top edge of a ramp, where the deck meets the curved riding surface.
What is the difference between a quarter pipe and a half-pipe?
A quarter pipe is one curved ramp, a quarter of a pipe. A half-pipe is two quarter pipes facing each other, with a flat bottom between them. A small half-pipe is called a mini ramp.
What is a funbox in a skatepark?
A box shape with a flat top and a ramp on two or more sides. It often carries extra pieces such as a rail or a ledge, so it can be used for many tricks.
