Inside a tooth 12

  1. Crown (job: to bite and chew food) The part of the tooth over the gum, covered in enamel.
  2. Root (job: to anchor the tooth in the jaw) The part below the gum, set in a socket in the jawbone.
  3. Neck (job: to join the crown to the root) The narrow zone at the gum line, where enamel meets cementum.
  4. Enamel (job: to protect the tooth from wear) The outer layer of the crown, the hardest substance in the body.
  5. Dentin (job: to support the enamel) The thick layer under the enamel and cementum, most of the tooth.
  6. Pulp (job: to feed the tooth and give it feeling) Soft tissue in the central chamber, holding nerves and blood vessels.
  7. Root canal (job: to carry nerves and vessels down the root) The narrow lower part of the pulp space, one inside each root.
  8. Cementum (job: to give the ligament a hold on the root) A thin bone-like layer that covers the root.
  9. Gum (gingiva) (job: to seal round the tooth and cover the bone) Soft tissue over the jawbone and round the neck of each tooth.
  10. Periodontal ligament (job: to tie the root to the jawbone) Fibers that run from the cementum to the bone of the socket.
  11. Jawbone (alveolar bone) (job: to hold the socket the tooth sits in) The ridge of the jaw that holds the tooth sockets. It is part of the maxilla above and the mandible below.
  12. Apical foramen (job: to let nerves and vessels into the tooth) The opening at the tip of each root, where the canal ends.

Types of teeth 4

  1. Incisors (job: to cut food) Four in each jaw, at the front, each with one straight edge.
  2. Canines (job: to tear food) Two in each jaw, one beside the incisors on each side. Each has one point.
  3. Premolars (job: to tear and crush food) Four in each jaw, two a side, between canine and molars.
  4. Molars (job: to grind food) Six in each jaw, three a side at the back. They have broad tops, and the third is the wisdom tooth.

How this list was compiled: Every name, place and job was checked on 2026-09-30 against Kenhub, Tooth anatomy, https://www.kenhub.com/en/library/anatomy/anatomy-of-the-tooth; Wikipedia, Human tooth, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_tooth; and Gray, Anatomy of the Human Body, 20th edition, 1918 (public domain), the section on the teeth, https://archive.org/details/anatomyofhumanbo00grayrich. How it works

A back tooth cut down the middle, in its socket in the jaw. Each part has its name and its job beside it. Below is a row of teeth to sort by type. Then take the tooth anatomy quiz.

From the outside in

Enamel caps the crown. Under it is dentin, which makes up most of the tooth. In the middle is the pulp, with nerves and blood vessels that come in through the tip of each root. Cementum coats the roots, and the periodontal ligament ties it to the jawbone.

Label the teeth by type

From the front of one side: two incisors, one canine, two premolars, three molars. As a dental anatomy quiz the page asks two things about each part, its name and then what it does.

  • Enamel covers the crown and cementum covers the root; they meet at the neck.
  • Count back from the middle on one side: 2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolars, 3 molars.

Questions and answers

What are the main parts of a tooth?

The crown above the gum, the root in the jawbone and the neck between them. Inside, three hard layers, enamel, dentin and cementum, surround the soft pulp in the middle.

What is the hardest part of a tooth?

Enamel, the outer layer of the crown. It is the hardest substance in the human body and protects the softer dentin under it from wear.

What do the four types of teeth do?

Incisors at the front cut food. Canines, the pointed teeth beside them, tear it. Premolars and molars at the back crush and grind it. An adult has 32 teeth: 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and 12 molars.

Can I use this to label the features of a typical tooth?

Yes, for practice. The drawing is our own and not a copy of any textbook figure, so it is not an answer key: your course may ask for a different set of names.
