How it works
Two drawings, not a name on either. The upper one is a cut across the trunk at the level of the spleen; the lower one is the spleen alone, turned to show the face its vessels enter. The microscope view is on the spleen diagram.

Word bank for the blank spleen labeling diagram
Cut across the trunk, five: spleen, stomach, left kidney, diaphragm, gastrosplenic ligament. Inner face, five: hilum, splenic artery, splenic vein, gastric surface, renal surface. An older book writes lienal artery, lienal vein and gastrolienal ligament, from lien, the Latin for spleen.
Where each name goes
Six parts have a line: left kidney, diaphragm, gastrosplenic ligament, hilum, splenic artery and splenic vein. Write spleen on the curved wedge against the body wall and stomach on the rounded bag in front of it. On the lower drawing a ridge runs down the face: gastric surface goes on the broad side, renal surface on the narrow one. The winding vessel is the artery.
- The liver, the right kidney, the backbone and the two vessels in front of the backbone are drawn as landmarks and take no label.
- Hold the cut with the backbone at the bottom: the front of the body is then at the top, its left side on your right.
Questions and answers
What does the spleen do?
It filters the blood. The spleen takes old and damaged red blood cells out of circulation, keeps a reserve of blood in its sinuses, and its lymphocytes react to pathogens that the blood carries.
Which artery supplies the spleen?
The splenic artery, a branch of the celiac trunk. It runs along the upper edge of the pancreas, is known for its winding course, and divides into several branches just before it reaches the hilum.
Where does the splenic vein drain?
Into the hepatic portal vein, which it forms by joining the superior mesenteric vein. The portal vein then carries the blood on to the liver.
What is the gastrosplenic ligament?
A double fold of peritoneum, part of the greater omentum, that runs from the greater curvature of the stomach to the hilum of the spleen. The short gastric and left gastroepiploic vessels travel inside it.
