How this list was compiled: Tunisia has 24 governorates. This drawing has 23 shapes, because its boundary data draws Ariana and Manouba as one: Manouba was split from Ariana on 31 July 2000 (https://www.statoids.com/utn.html and https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gouvernorat_de_la_Manouba, read on 2026-10-01). The page numbers and asks the 22 other governorates; the one older shape is in the list for the drawing and is never asked. Today's 24 names were read on 2026-10-01 in the table 'July 1 population by governorate' of Tunisia's National Institute of Statistics (https://www.ins.tn/en/statistiques/111) and in ISO 3166-2:TN as Wikipedia prints it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:TN). Labels are the usual English spellings, and the French ones are accepted (Kef and Le Kef; accents never count). Algeria and Libya are land that is not numbered or asked. How it works

This blank map of Tunisia opens on the plain outline of the country, with Algeria and Libya as plain land beside it. Switch Borders on for the governorate lines; around the capital they are the lines of before 2000.

Why 22 governorates have numbers

Tunisia has 24 governorates. The lines are older than one change: Manouba was made in 2000 from part of Ariana, and that line is not drawn. Numbered and Named label the other 22. The one area that holds both Ariana and Manouba, beside Tunis, stays unlabeled.

  • To finish the map by hand, students draw the missing line: Ariana is the part on the coast, Manouba the part inland to its west.

Questions and answers

How many governorates does Tunisia have?

Twenty-four. This map numbers 22 of them. Ariana and Manouba, beside the capital, share one unlabeled area, because the lines there are older than 2000, the year Manouba was made from part of Ariana.

Which is the largest governorate of Tunisia?

Tataouine, in the desert south, followed by Kebili. Tunis, the governorate of the capital, is the smallest.

Is Djerba on the map?

Yes. Djerba, the island off the southeast coast in the Gulf of Gabès, is drawn as part of Medenine, the governorate it belongs to. It has no number of its own.

What is around Tunisia on the map?

Algeria to the west and Libya to the southeast, drawn as plain land without names. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the north and east. The capital, Tunis, is not marked.
