Each governorate is a button. Use the arrow keys to move between them and Enter to choose. Names are read out in Study, and once a governorate is answered.
How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01; names, ids and accepted spellings are Natural Earth's. The 27 items are the governorates; names and the count were compared with en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdivisions_of_Egypt on 2026-10-01 (all 27 names are on that list). The three groups are a teaching order of this site, not an official division. Licence: public domain (Natural Earth terms of use: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/)

How it works
This blank map of Egypt prints the country with the Nile and its 27 governorates, from Alexandria in the north to Aswan in the south. Switch Borders off for a plain outline with the river, ready for ancient Egypt.

An Egypt outline map with the Nile
Two switches sit over the map. Borders removes the lines between the governorates and leaves the outline of the country. Rivers removes the Nile and the two branches of its delta. Keep Rivers on and Borders off for a map to mark cities and pyramids on.
The governorates, numbered or named
Numbered and Named put a number or a name on 24 governorates. Three desert governorates fill most of the map: New Valley, Red Sea and Matrouh. Twelve more crowd into the Delta and along the Suez Canal. Damietta, Port Said and Luxor are too small to write on and carry no number.
For ancient Egypt, have students mark Lower Egypt at the Delta in the north and Upper Egypt in the south, as far as Aswan.
Questions and answers
How many governorates does Egypt have?
Twenty-seven, each with a capital city. All are drawn here, and the 24 large enough to write on are numbered. The three largest are New Valley in the southwest, Red Sea in the east and Matrouh in the northwest.
Can I print the Egypt map blank and then with names?
Yes. It opens blank. Choose Named for the names of the governorates or Numbered for numbers, and Print the answer key gives the names to check against.
Is there an Egypt map quiz?
Yes. Press Quiz yourself on this map and the page names one governorate at a time for you to tap. The desert governorates and the two of Sinai are the easiest to find first.
Whose is the Hala'ib Triangle?
Some borders on this map are disputed. Disputed areas are shown but not asked. The Hala'ib Triangle is administered by Egypt and claimed by Sudan; the map draws it with the Red Sea governorate.
