How it works

This facts about countries quiz asks about largest cities that are not capitals, landlocked and island countries, official languages, old names, highest points and size. Every answer is a country, and every fact was checked in two sources.

Read the full guide

Six sets, ten at a time

Tap a country and the answer shows at once with its explanation. A round is ten questions from all six sets. The Start from menu under the question stays on one set: Official languages alone makes a country language quiz.

For a class or a quiz night

After a round, print a 10-question sheet with its answer key, or the whole set. The list under the quiz holds every question and answer, ready to read aloud as a countries general knowledge quiz or a country knowledge quiz.

How the facts were checked

Most questions are built from tables read on one day. A fact that two sources did not agree on was left out.

  • The largest city is often not the capital: Sydney, Toronto and Lagos are three in the quiz.

Questions and answers

Which countries are landlocked?

Forty-three member states of the United Nations have no coast on the open sea, among them Bolivia, Mongolia, Nepal and Switzerland. The United Nations lists 32 of them as landlocked developing countries.

Which countries are doubly landlocked?

Only two: Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan. Every neighbor of each is landlocked too, so the nearest sea coast is at least two borders away.

Which country used to be called Ceylon?

Sri Lanka. Other old names in the quiz are Persia for Iran, Burma for Myanmar, the Gold Coast for Ghana, Zaire for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Swaziland for Eswatini.

Can I print this country facts quiz with answers?

Yes. Finish a round, then press Print and tick With answer key: the key prints on the last page. To save a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print window.

Why are there no capitals or flags?

They have pages of their own, such as the world capitals quiz and the map quizzes. This quiz asks the country facts those pages leave out.
