How this list was compiled: Questions, wrong choices and explanations were written for this site. Every nickname was found for its country in two sources read on 2026-10-01: a Wikipedia article that states the name (the country's article, or its article on the country's names), and a printed book or magazine found by full-text search on archive.org, where the passage was read; or, where no Wikipedia article states the name, two printed sources by different authors. Each question names both and carries both links in "sources". Licence: own work

How it works

This country nicknames quiz gives a nickname, such as the Land of the Rising Sun or the Pearl of Africa, and asks which country it belongs to. Every answer says where the name comes from or who uses it.

Read the full guide

Pick the country

Read the nickname and tap a country. The answer shows at once, with a line on where the name comes from. A round is ten nicknames.

Two sets

The first set holds twenty names that begin with Land, such as the Land of a Thousand Lakes. The second holds the isles, pearls, kingdoms and the rest. The Start from menu under the question picks one set.

Print it

After a round, Print lists its questions: add more, tick With answer key, and the key prints on the last page. The list under the quiz shows every nickname with its country.

Questions and answers

Which country is called the Land of the Rising Sun?

Japan. The name points to Japan's place east of China, where the sun rises.

Which country is the Emerald Isle?

Ireland. The island's lush green plants, a result of its mild climate and frequent rain, earned it the name.

Which country is the Land of a Thousand Lakes?

Finland. The country has more than 180,000 recorded lakes, which is where the name comes from.

Why is the Land of the Morning Calm not in the quiz?

It is an old English rendering of a name for Korea as a whole, so it fits both North Korea and South Korea. A nickname that could point to two countries is left out.

Can I print the country nicknames quiz with answers?

Yes. Finish a round, then press Print and tick With answer key: the key prints on the last page. To save a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print window.
