How this list was compiled: Electoral votes of the 50 states and the District of Columbia: National Archives, 'Distribution of Electoral Votes', https://www.archives.gov/electoral-college/allocation, read 2026-10-01 (a United States government work): the allocations based on the 2020 Census, 'effective for the 2024 and 2028 presidential elections', 538 in all with 270 needed to elect; every state has two votes for its senators plus one for each congressional district, and the District of Columbia has three under the 23rd Amendment; Maine and Nebraska appoint one elector for the winner in each congressional district and two for the statewide winner. The 51 numbers were read off that page by program and add up to 538. The House seats in each detail line are the state's votes less two. The states, their points, rings and shapes are those of data/us-states-quiz.json (its drawing is copied here unchanged; sources in that file). The District of Columbia has no shape on the drawing: its point (770.5, 243.8) was projected from 38.9072 N 77.0369 W with a fit through the capital points of Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania in data/us-states-quiz.json (largest error 0.1 unit) and its ring is set off the coast below Maryland's. The drawing: Drawn for this site from the U.S. Census Bureau 2023 cartographic boundary file cb_2023_us_state_20m (scale 1:20,000,000), https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/GENZ2023/kml/cb_2023_us_state_20m.zip, downloaded 2026-09-18. Albers equal-area conic projection. Alaska is drawn at 35 percent of the scale of the other states and, like Hawaii, moved into an inset. Small islands are left out. How it works

This electoral college map quiz asks two things about each place: its name, then its electoral votes for the 2024 and 2028 elections. The District of Columbia is asked with the 50 states, which makes 51.

The counts that repeat

The hard part of an electoral map quiz is a number that many states share. Seven places have 3 votes and seven have 4. Six states have 6: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Nevada and Utah. Five have 10: Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. Four have 11: Arizona, Indiana, Massachusetts and Tennessee.

Nine counts that name one state

Washington 12, Virginia 13, New Jersey 14, Michigan 15, Ohio 17, New York 28, Florida 30, Texas 40 and California 54. No other state has any of these numbers, so learn them first.

Questions and answers

Which states have 3 electoral votes?

Alaska, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming, and the District of Columbia. For a state, three is the smallest count possible: two for its senators and one for a single seat in the House.

Which states have 4 electoral votes?

Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Montana moved up from 3 and West Virginia down from 5 when seats in the House were shared out again after the 2020 census.

Which states gained or lost electoral votes after the 2020 census?

By the Census Bureau's 2020 count, Texas gained two. Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon gained one each. California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia lost one each. A map from before 2024 is wrong for those thirteen.

Does Washington DC have electoral votes?

Yes, three, under the 23rd Amendment. The District is too small to draw on this map, so it is asked at a ring set off the Atlantic coast, below the ring for Maryland.
