How it works

This factor label method worksheet with answers has 40 unit conversions in four sets, from a single factor to chains with rates and cubed units. Every answer shows its set-up on one line. The method is also called dimensional analysis.

How the factor-label method works

Write the measurement with its unit. Multiply by a conversion factor written as a fraction, with the unit you want to lose on the bottom. Cancel units the way you cancel numbers. Repeat until only the unit you want is left, then do the arithmetic.

Four sets, then paper

One factor gives the factor in the question. Metric to metric uses the prefixes. US customary and metric uses factors from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Chains adds rates and squared or cubed units. The page opens on its worksheet of all 40 problems: remove any, tick With answer key, then press Print the worksheet.

  • A conversion factor equals 1, so it changes the unit and not the amount.
  • For a squared or cubed unit, square or cube the whole factor.
  • Round at the end, to the significant figures of the measurement you started with.

Questions and answers

What is the factor-label method?

A way to convert units by multiplying by fractions equal to 1, such as 2.54 cm / 1 in, set up so that the unwanted units cancel. It is also called dimensional analysis.

Which conversion factors are exact?

By definition 1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m and 1 mi = 1.609344 km, and metric prefixes are exact powers of ten. An exact factor does not limit the significant figures of an answer.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Multiply by (1,000 m / 1 km) and by (1 h / 3,600 s). Kilometers and hours cancel, so 90.0 km/h is 25.0 m/s.

Does the printed worksheet come with answers?

Yes. Tick With answer key beside Print the worksheet and the key prints after the problems; the sheet opens with all 40.

How this list was compiled: Problems, wrong choices and explanations were written for this site. Conversion factors between US customary and SI units: NIST Special Publication 811 (Guide for the Use of the International System of Units), Appendix B.9, https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811/nist-guide-si-appendix-b-conversion-factors/nist-guide-si-appendix-b9, read 2026-10-01; the page prints exact factors in boldface (inch, foot, yard, mile, hour, minute, day, liter to cubic meter), and the pound, gallon, quart and fluid ounce are the table's seven-figure values. Prefix factors (kilo, centi, milli, micro): NIST, Metric (SI) prefixes, https://www.nist.gov/pml/owm/metric-si-prefixes, read 2026-10-01. Every answer was worked along the chain of factors, rounded to the significant figures of the given measurement, and worked a second time as a check. Licence: own work
