Each numbered ring is a button. Use the arrow keys to move between them and Enter to choose. Names are read out in Study, and once a muscle is answered.
MylohyoidA flat sheet between the two halves of the lower jaw.
PectoralisA large fan-shaped chest muscle. Its fibers run together to the upper arm.
DeltoidThe muscle on the front of the shoulder. It runs onto the upper arm.
Rectus abdominisA band down the middle of the belly, crossed by tendon lines.
External obliqueA thin sheet that covers the side of the body.
Triceps femorisA very large thigh muscle with three heads. It straightens the knee.
Adductor longusA narrow muscle, mostly hidden under the sartorius.
SartoriusA long narrow band that crosses the thigh.
Adductor magnusA large, thick muscle behind the sartorius.
Gracilis major (rectus internus major)A large muscle along the back of the thigh. Older books call it rectus internus major.
Gracilis minor (rectus internus minor)A slender band along the back edge of the thigh.
Tibialis anticusThe muscle on the front of the lower leg.
From above 12
TemporalisA jaw muscle between the eye and the eardrum.
Depressor mandibulaeA triangle behind the eardrum. It opens the mouth.
InfraspinatusA muscle from the shoulder blade to the upper arm.
Latissimus dorsiA triangle behind the shoulder. Its fibers run together to the upper arm.
Extensor dorsi communisA long muscle along each side of the backbone.
GluteusA hip muscle from the hip bone to the thigh bone.
Iliofibularis (biceps)A long slender muscle between two big ones. Some books call it the biceps.
SemimembranosusA large, stout muscle on the back of the thigh.
PyriformisA short, slender muscle at the root of the thigh. It starts at the tip of the urostyle.
GastrocnemiusThe calf muscle, the largest of the lower leg.
PeroneusA stout muscle beside the calf muscle. The tibialis anticus lies on its other side.
Achilles tendonThe strong tendon of the calf muscle. It passes the ankle to the foot.

How it works
This frog muscle quiz shows the muscles a biology class names on a frog. The first view is from below, with the chest, belly and thigh. The second is from above, with the back, hip and calf.

From below
The mylohyoid lies under the head and the pectoralis fans across the chest. The rectus abdominis runs down the middle of the belly. On the thigh, six muscles lie side by side from the front edge to the back edge: triceps femoris first, gracilis minor last.
From above
The second view is from above. Small jaw muscles sit by the eardrum, and one long muscle follows each side of the backbone. The calf muscle is the gastrocnemius, and it ends in the Achilles tendon. Show me the labels first writes every name on the drawing.
Books name some frog muscles differently: gracilis major is also rectus internus major, and the iliofibularis is also the biceps. The quiz accepts both.
Questions and answers
What is the largest muscle in a frog's lower leg?
The gastrocnemius. It is the calf muscle, and it ends in the strong Achilles tendon, which passes the ankle to the foot.
Which muscle opens a frog's mouth?
The depressor mandibulae. It is a triangular muscle just behind the eardrum, and it pulls the back of the lower jaw so that the mouth opens.
What is the triceps femoris of a frog?
It is the very large muscle on the front of the thigh. It starts as three heads and ends in one strong tendon over the knee, and it straightens the leg.
What is the sartorius muscle of a frog?
A long, narrow band on the underside of the thigh. It crosses the thigh at a slant, from the hip to just below the knee.
