Each numbered ring is a button. Use the arrow keys to move between them and Enter to choose. Names are read out in Study, and once a fold or groove is answered.
Central sulcusThe groove between the frontal and parietal lobes.
Lateral sulcusThe deep groove above the temporal lobe. It parts that lobe from the parietal and frontal lobes.
Precentral gyrusThe fold just in front of the central sulcus. It holds the primary motor cortex.
Postcentral gyrusThe fold just behind the central sulcus. It holds the primary somatosensory cortex.
Superior temporal gyrusThe fold between the lateral sulcus and the superior temporal sulcus.
Cingulate gyrusThe fold that wraps round the corpus callosum.
Parieto-occipital sulcusThe groove between the parietal and occipital lobes.
Calcarine sulcusThe groove under the cuneus. The primary visual cortex lies along it.
From the side 10
Superior frontal gyrusThe top fold of the frontal lobe, above the superior frontal sulcus.
Middle frontal gyrusThe fold from superior to inferior frontal sulcus.
Inferior frontal gyrusThe lowest fold of the frontal lobe, under its inferior sulcus. It has three parts: orbital, triangular and opercular.
Precentral sulcusThe groove in front of the precentral gyrus. It runs alongside the central sulcus.
Postcentral sulcusThe groove behind the postcentral gyrus. It runs alongside the central sulcus.
Intraparietal sulcusThe groove between the superior and inferior parietal lobules.
Supramarginal gyrusThe fold that arches over the end of the lateral sulcus.
Angular gyrusThe fold that arches over the end of the superior temporal sulcus.
Middle temporal gyrusThe middle of the three folds of the temporal lobe.
Inferior temporal gyrusThe lowest fold on the side of the temporal lobe. It wraps round onto the underside.
Inner face 4
Cingulate sulcusThe groove above the cingulate gyrus. Its back end turns up to the top edge.
Paracentral lobuleThe inner-face continuation of the precentral and postcentral gyri.
PrecuneusThe square fold of the parietal lobe, in front of the cuneus.
CuneusThe wedge between the parieto-occipital and calcarine sulci.

How it works
Label the sulci and gyri of the brain in a quiz that starts at once: a name comes up and you tap it on the drawing. A heavy line is a sulcus. A block between lines is a gyrus.

Pairs that get swapped
Supramarginal and angular gyrus: two blocks side by side. The one round the hook of the lateral sulcus is the supramarginal, and the angular is behind it, where a thin line ends. Precuneus and cuneus: the square block, then the wedge behind it, with the parieto-occipital sulcus between them. Cingulate gyrus and cingulate sulcus: the band round the arch, and the heavy line along its outer side.
Sulcus is Latin for furrow, and calcarine comes from calcar, a spur.
Questions and answers
Why does the brain have gyri and sulci?
Folding fits more cortex into the skull. The skull limits the size of the brain, and the ridges and grooves give the cortex a larger surface, and so more nerve cells, than a smooth brain of the same size would have.
Which gyrus is Broca's area in?
The inferior frontal gyrus, in its opercular and triangular parts, on the dominant side of the brain. In the quiz it is the lowest of the three long strips at the front.
What does the superior temporal gyrus do?
It takes in sound. Part of it, the transverse temporal gyri, is the primary auditory area. Behind that lies the auditory association area, and on the dominant side, usually the left, the back of it belongs to Wernicke's area.
What does the paracentral lobule control?
Movement and feeling in the opposite leg. On the drawing it is the block on the top edge of the inner face, marked by a short notch.
Is the fissure of Rolando the same as the central sulcus?
Yes. Fissure of Rolando and central fissure are other names for the central sulcus, the first groove this quiz asks for. If you type your answers, either name counts, as does Sylvian fissure for the lateral sulcus.
