Show the list

Down the midline 7

  1. Longitudinal fissure The deep groove between the two cerebral hemispheres.
  2. Cingulate gyrus The fold just above the corpus callosum.
  3. Body of the corpus callosum The middle stretch of the band joining the two hemispheres. It roofs the lateral ventricles.
  4. Body of the lateral ventricle The central part of the lateral ventricle, under the corpus callosum.
  5. Third ventricle A narrow slit on the midline between the two thalami.
  6. Hypothalamus The region below the thalamus, beside the third ventricle.
  7. Mammillary body One of two small round bodies on the underside of the brain.

Deep gray and white matter 5

  1. Thalamus A large egg-shaped mass of gray matter beside the third ventricle. It relays signals to and from the cortex.
  2. Caudate nucleus A curved nucleus that follows the lateral ventricle.
  3. Internal capsule A white-matter band between thalamus and lentiform nucleus.
  4. Putamen The outer part of the lens-shaped lentiform nucleus.
  5. Globus pallidus The inner part of the lentiform nucleus, toward the midline.

Edge, temporal lobe and base 7

  1. Cerebral cortex (gray matter) The folded outer layer of gray matter. White matter lies under it.
  2. Lateral sulcus The deep cleft above the temporal lobe. The insula lies at its bottom.
  3. Temporal lobe The lobe below the lateral sulcus.
  4. Amygdala An ovoid mass of gray matter deep in the temporal lobe.
  5. Inferior horn of the lateral ventricle The part of the lateral ventricle that runs into the temporal lobe.
  6. Hippocampus A curled ridge in the inferior horn's floor.
  7. Optic tract A band of sight fibers running back from the optic chiasm.

How it works

This coronal section of brain label quiz asks for seven parts down the midline, five deep masses and bands, then seven at the edge, in the temporal lobe and on the base. Paired parts are ringed on one side only.

Two pairs that get mixed up

The putamen and the globus pallidus are the two pieces of one wedge: the putamen is the curved outer piece, the globus pallidus the inner piece with its point toward the midline. The caudate nucleus is the small oval at the outer corner of the lateral ventricle, right under the corpus callosum; the thalamus is the large round mass beside the midline slit.

Low in the temporal lobe

Three parts sit close together, one under the other: the amygdala is the oval at the top, the inferior horn the small curved space in the middle, and the hippocampus the curled body at the bottom.

Questions and answers

What is the lentiform nucleus?

The putamen and the globus pallidus taken together. Cut horizontally, the pair has the outline of a lens; in a coronal section like this one it is closer to a triangle. The quiz asks for its two parts and never for the whole.

What separates the caudate nucleus from the putamen?

The internal capsule, a band of white matter. The caudate nucleus and the thalamus lie on its midline side, the putamen and the globus pallidus on its outer side. Caudate nucleus and putamen together are called the striatum.

Is the Sylvian fissure the same as the lateral sulcus?

Yes. Lateral sulcus, lateral fissure and Sylvian fissure all name the deep cleft with the frontal and parietal lobes above it and the temporal lobe below. Typed as an answer, any of the three counts.

Are the mammillary bodies part of the hypothalamus?

They are often classed as its rear part. The quiz asks for each on its own: the hypothalamus is the block beside the lower end of the third ventricle, and a mammillary body is the small round body on the base under it.

Is the amygdala in front of the hippocampus?

Yes. The hippocampus stretches from the amygdala back toward the splenium of the corpus callosum. This drawing is a schematic, not a scan: it puts both on one slice, the amygdala above the hippocampus, so each can be asked.
