Parts of a car in Italian, by article
Eighteen of the 24 words are masculine. Six are feminine: la portiera, la ruota, la targa, la cintura di sicurezza, la frizione and la leva del cambio. Lo stands before s plus a consonant, as in lo specchietto retrovisore and lo sterzo.
Words built from two
Il parabrezza is para plus brezza, a breeze, after the French pare-brise. Il paraurti is para plus urto, an impact. Il tergicristallo joins tergere, to wipe, and cristallo, and il portaoggetti joins portare, to carry, and oggetti, things.
Questions and answers
How do you say car in Italian?
La macchina in everyday speech, l'automobile as the full word and l'auto as its short form. All three are feminine.
Is it il pneumatico or lo pneumatico?
Both are in use. Treccani writes i (or gli) pneumatici in its own entry, and the example in WordReference has gli pneumatici. The drawing shows lo pneumatico.
Is a car door la portiera or lo sportello?
Both. WordReference lists sportello first for the door of a vehicle, then portiera, and Treccani uses both words for the door of a car. Lo sportello counts when typed.
What is the trunk of a car called in Italian?
Il bagagliaio. Everyday speech also says il baule, which Treccani marks as everyday, not technical, use, and il portabagagli, a word that can also mean a roof rack.
What are the pedals called in Italian?
From left to right: la frizione (clutch), il freno (brake) and l'acceleratore (gas). Strictly la frizione is the clutch itself; Treccani notes that everyday speech uses the word for its pedal.
