How it works
The parts of a rabbit start with the ones everyone knows: long ears, whiskers, a short tail and big hind legs. Keepers add a few more, such as dewlap, loin and hock. Tap a ring to label a rabbit part.

Body first, then a keeper's words
Numbers 1 to 10 are the everyday parts: the ears, eye, nose, whiskers, tail, front legs, hind legs, hind foot, back and belly. Numbers 11 to 15 are the words used at a rabbit show: the dewlap under the chin, the shoulder, the loin, the rump and the hock.
- A rabbit's hind legs are much longer than its front legs. That is why it hops.
- The hock is the heel of the long hind foot.
Questions and answers
What is the dewlap on a rabbit?
A fold of skin under the chin. It develops as a rabbit matures, and it is mostly seen on does, the females.
Why do rabbits have long ears?
To hear danger coming and to keep cool. The ears help a rabbit detect predators, and their large surface helps the body lose heat in warm weather.
How many toes does a rabbit have?
A front foot has four toes and a dewclaw. Each hind foot has four long toes. A rabbit has no paw pads: thick, coarse fur covers the underside of its feet.
Where is the loin on a rabbit?
On the lower back, behind the ribs and in front of the rump. Show standards describe a rabbit's shape by its shoulders, loin and hindquarters.
