Start at the waist
Numbers 1 to 7 are at the top of the jeans: the waistband, a belt loop, the button, the fly, a front pocket, the coin pocket and the rivets. Open the second drawing for 8 to 15. On the back of the jeans, find a back pocket, a leg, a hem, the inseam and the yoke. The dress pants add pleats, a crease down each leg and cuffs.
- The zipper sits behind the fly, so you cannot see it. Zipper is accepted for the fly.
- A hem is stitched flat. A cuff is a hem folded up on the outside.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a pant called?
A waistband at the top with belt loops, a fly at the middle front, pockets at the front and back, two legs, an inseam down the inside of each leg, and a hem or a cuff at the bottom.
What are the parts of jeans called?
Jeans have a waistband with belt loops and a button, a fly, two front pockets, a small coin pocket, two back pockets and a yoke under the back waistband. Metal rivets strengthen the pocket corners.
What is the small pocket on jeans called?
A coin pocket or watch pocket. It sits inside one of the front pockets. With the two front pockets and the two back pockets, it makes five pockets.
What is the difference between a hem and a cuff?
Both finish the bottom of a leg. A hem is turned under and stitched so the edge does not fray. A cuff is folded up on the outside; in British English it is called a turn-up.
