Start here: 6 you know 6

  1. Eye What you see with. Each eye sits in a bony hollow of the skull, protected by its eyelids and eyelashes.
  2. Nose What you breathe and smell through, in the middle of the face.
  3. Ear What you hear with. The part you can see is the outer ear; the rest is inside the head.
  4. Lips The soft edges of the mouth, upper and lower. The groove above the upper lip is the philtrum.
  5. Cheek The soft side of the face below each eye. Between the nose and the ear.
  6. Chin The bottom of the face, below the lips. At the front of the jaw.

Other 7

  1. Forehead The part of the face from the eyebrows up to the hairline.
  2. Temple The flat side of the head, at the edge of the forehead. Between the corner of the eye and the ear.
  3. Eyebrow The arch of hair above each eye. It is thought to help keep sweat and rain out of the eyes.
  4. Eyelid The fold of skin that closes over the eye. It closes when you blink or sleep. Each eye has an upper and a lower eyelid.
  5. Eyelashes The short hairs along the edge of the eyelids. They help keep dust out of the eyes.
  6. Nostril The two openings at the bottom of the nose. Air passes through them.
  7. Jaw The bone along the lower edge of the face. It runs from below the ear to the chin. The lower jaw moves when you talk and chew.

The drawing: Drawn for this site on 2026-10-05, from the artist's rules for the proportions of a head seen from the front (eyes halfway down the head, five eye widths across, the ears between the brow and the base of the nose). Own work, nothing traced. Licence: own work

How it works

These are the parts of a face, the everyday names children learn first, on one simple face. Start with the 6 you already know, then the smaller parts of the face.

Top to bottom

The forehead runs from the hairline down to the eyebrows, with a temple at each side. Under the eyebrows are the eyes, each with an eyelid and eyelashes. The nose sits in the middle, with two nostrils at the bottom.

The lower face

The cheeks are either side of the nose. Below the nose are the lips, round the mouth, and below them the chin. The jaw runs along the lower edge of the face, from below each ear to the chin.

  • Point to each part on your own face as you find it in the drawing.
