How it works
This blank map of Somalia shows 13 regions, from Bari in the northeast to Lower Juba in the south. Somaliland is drawn as the map source draws it, as separate land without numbers. Switch Borders off for a plain outline.

Down the coast
Bari is the tip of the Horn of Africa, with the Gulf of Aden to its north and the Indian Ocean to its east. Nugaal, Mudug, Galguduud, Middle Shabelle, Banaadir, Lower Shabelle, Middle Juba and Lower Juba follow down the coast. Bakool, Bay, Gedo and Hiiraan lie inland.
Thirteen of eighteen regions
Somalia lists 18 regions. Five of them lie in the area the map source draws as Somaliland, which is one area with no lines inside, so they have no numbers. Bari and Nugaal are the two numbered regions beside it.
Questions and answers
How many regions does Somalia have?
Eighteen. This map numbers the 13 that the map source draws as shapes. The other five, Awdal, Woqooyi Galbeed, Togdheer, Sanaag and Sool, lie in the area the map source draws as Somaliland and are not shapes of their own.
Why is Somaliland not numbered?
Some borders on this map are disputed. Disputed areas are shown but not asked. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 and Somalia regards it as part of its territory; the map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, and does not take a side.
Which region is Mogadishu in?
Banaadir, on the Indian Ocean coast. It is the smallest region on the map, so small that its number covers it. Mogadishu is the capital of Somalia.
Which countries border Somalia?
Ethiopia to the west and Kenya to the southwest touch the outline on this sheet. Djibouti, to the northwest, is a third neighbor where Somaliland is drawn as part of Somalia; on this sheet the map source draws Somaliland as separate land in between.
Can I print Somalia without the region lines?
Yes. Switch Borders off and the sheet prints the outline alone, with Somaliland as separate plain land, as the map source draws it.
