How it works
This blank map of Ethiopia opens on the plain outline of the country, with Lake Tana in the northwest. Switch Borders on for the region lines of before 2020; nine regions and cities that exist today are numbered.

Outline first
The sheet opens with nothing inside the outline but Lake Tana, which lies in Amhara. It is a sheet to draw rivers, cities or regions on. Borders adds the region lines.
Why nine have numbers
The lines are those of before 2020. Numbered and Named label nine units that exist today: Addis Ababa and the regions Afar, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambela, Harari, Oromia, Somali and Tigray. The large southern area has since been divided into four regions and stays unlabeled. Dire Dawa, beside Harari, is drawn without a number.
- To finish the map, have students draw the four new southern regions in by hand.
Questions and answers
How many regions does Ethiopia have?
Twelve regional states; Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa are chartered cities. The map source is older: it shows one southern region where there are now four, Sidama, South West Ethiopia Peoples’, South Ethiopia and Central Ethiopia.
What is the capital of Ethiopia?
Addis Ababa, a chartered city of its own. It is the small shape near the middle of the map, and the first number on the sheet.
Why is Dire Dawa not numbered?
Dire Dawa and Harari are two very small shapes side by side in the east, too close for two marks. Harari, a regional state, has the number; Dire Dawa, a chartered city, is the shape just northwest of it.
Are any borders on this map disputed?
Some borders on this map are disputed. The map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, and does not take a side. It draws the west of Tigray, around Humera and Welkait, inside Tigray; Tigray and Amhara both claim that land.
Which countries border Ethiopia?
Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan. Ethiopia has no coast. On this map the neighbors are plain land without names.
