How this list was compiled: French country names, the article and gender of each, capitals and the names of inhabitants: "Recommandation concernant les noms d'États, d'habitants, de capitales, de sièges diplomatiques ou consulaires (liste établie par le ministère des affaires étrangères et européennes)", Journal officiel de la République française n°0223 of 24 September 2008, text 91, NOR CTNX0818389X, https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/jorf/id/JORFTEXT000019509867. legifrance.gouv.fr answered every automated request with HTTP 403 on 2026-09-20, so the text was read in the Internet Archive copy of 2025-10-24, https://web.archive.org/web/20251024055327/https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/jorf/id/JORFTEXT000019509867, read 2026-09-20; the build script stops if a name typed for this file is not in that list. A person should compare the labels with the live page before launch. Two names are newer than that list. Macédoine du Nord (the 2008 list prints the provisional name of the time) and Tchéquie (accepted beside la République tchèque): https://www.un.org/fr/about-us/member-states, 193 member states, read live 2026-09-20, with gender from https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Macédoine_du_Nord and https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Tchéquie, read 2026-09-20. Other United Nations forms accepted as typed answers (Bélarus, République de Moldova, Fédération de Russie, Türkiye, the long name of the United Kingdom): the same United Nations page; gender of Bélarus and Moldova from https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Bélarus and https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Moldova, read 2026-09-20. Kyiv as a less common French spelling of Kiev: https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Kiev, read 2026-09-20. The rule for en, au, aux and à before a country name (en before a feminine name or a vowel, au before a masculine name that starts with a consonant, aux before a plural, à before a name with no article): https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/en, French preposition, the table under the country sense, read 2026-09-20. Each inTheCountry value is worked out from that rule and the gender and article in the official list. Region names: https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/Europe_de_l’Ouest, Europe_du_Sud, Europe_du_Nord, Europe_de_l’Est and Caucase, read 2026-09-20. How a round goes

A country lights up and you pick its French name, such as l'Allemagne, from four. After a miss the right name is shown. A round is one region: Europe de l'Ouest first, then Europe du Sud in two halves, Europe du Nord, Europe de l'Est, and last Turquie, Chypre et Caucase.

Type the French name instead

Open More options and choose Type it. Accents are forgiven and the article can be left out, so grece counts for la Grèce. Find it runs the other way: a French name is given and you tap or click the country. The same menu switches every name to English.

  • L' hides the gender. Every l' country on this map is feminine except l'Azerbaïdjan.
  • Press Show me the labels first and tap a country to read its capital in French: Londres, Vienne, Varsovie, Lisbonne.
  • Print blank makes a numbered worksheet of the map. Print labelled is its answer key.

Questions and answers

Is it en France, au Portugal or aux Pays-Bas?

All three are right. En goes before a feminine country or any that starts with a vowel: en France, en Azerbaïdjan. Au goes before a masculine one: au Portugal. Aux goes before a plural: aux Pays-Bas. A country with no article takes à: à Malte.

Which European countries are masculine in French?

Le Danemark, le Liechtenstein, le Luxembourg, le Monténégro, le Portugal, le Royaume-Uni and l'Azerbaïdjan. Les Pays-Bas is masculine and plural. Monaco and Saint-Marin are masculine too and take no article, like Chypre and Malte. The other 36 are feminine, with la or l'.

Why does the map say la République tchèque and la Biélorussie?

Those are the names in France's official list. The United Nations writes Tchéquie and Bélarus in its French documents, as well as Moldova and Türkiye, and the type-in box accepts those too.

Where do the French names come from?

From the list of countries, capitals and inhabitants that France's foreign ministry published in the Journal officiel on September 24, 2008. Légifrance refused automated reading on the day of the check, so the Internet Archive copy of October 24, 2025 was read.
